TP SELECT: Peewee Selects Edge Royal York (# 1) 8-7 In A Thriller

IN AN EXCITING FINISH, THE PEEWEE SELECTS WIN THEIR FIRST GAME OF 2011

Davey (15) delivered a three run homer in the bottom of the first inning (2 AB; 1 H; 1 R; 3 RBI; 1 SO) and pitched a stellar fourth inning (1 IP; 0 ER; 1 H; 3 K's) for the victory.

In a thriller of a finish this evening at Christie Pits Diamond # 2,  The Toronto Playgrounds Peewee Select Team edged Royal York (# 1) 8-7 in the bottom of the fourth inning to win their home opener and first game of the 2011 season.

With two outs and a runner on third base, Sam (13) delivered a clutch deep fly ball to right field. The Royal York rightfielder had the ball land in his glove but he was unable to squeeze it for the final out.  As a result,  Micah (10) trotted home from third with the winning run.

Sam (13) delivered a clutch fly ball to rightfield in bottom of the fourth to deliver the Peewee Selects winning run.

It was a seesaw battle all night long. After the Peewee Selects had taken a 5-2 lead after two innings, the Royal York Cardinals pecked back with five runs in the top of the third to take a 7-5 lead.

However, the Peewee Selects gamely battled back with two runs in the bottom half of the third to even the game 7-7.

The turning point of the game occurred in the top of the fourth with Davey’s (15) stellar pitching performance against Royal York. He mowed down three consecutive Cardinals batters by striking out the side. By not allowing any runs, Davey allowed the Peewee Selects the opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Kudos to Davey [not only for his victorious pitching effort (1 IP; O ER; 1 H; 3 K’s)] but, also for his powerful home run to right centrefield in the first inning which scored three runs and allowed the Peewee Selects to start the game with a 3-0 lead (2 AB; 1 H; 1 R; 3 RBI; 1 SO).

And another kudos to Naiemul (7) for his spectacular double play defensive effort in the third inning. After making a super diving catch in centrefield to rob Royal York of a sure hit, he had the baseball sense to throw a strike home to catcher Mikel (2) who applied the tag on the Cardinals runner who had tagged up and was attempting to score from third. The Royal York runner was dead on arrival as he was called out by Umpire Ted Sharp.

The Peewee Selects (1-1) play their next game on Wednesday, June 8 at Christie Pits Diamond # 2 against York at 8 p.m.
