TP SELECT: Toronto Playgrounds Defeats York 12-8

MOSQUITO SELECTS WIN FIRST GAME AT WEST TORONTO MOSQUITO SELECT LOOP TOURNAMENT; BANTAM SELECTS USURPED BY ROYAL YORK 5-4 AT BANTAM LOOP TOURNEY

GAME MVP: John Eric (24) got on base in all four of his trips to the plate as he garnered 3 walks and delivered a clutch two run double.

Toronto Playgrounds defeated York 12-8 in five innings to win their first game last night at the West Toronto Mosquito Select Loop Tournament.

Simon (1) pitched two scoreless innings to start the game while striking out five.

The Mosquito Selects made the most of their opportunites in going for the jugular as they jumped out to a six run lead after 2 ½ innings of play and increased that margin to nine after 4 ½.

“Toronto Playgrounds jumped out to a commanding lead after 2 ½ and we never looked back,” said TP Mosquito Select Coach Michel Godel.

“The Mosquito Selects played a great game,” added TP Mosquito Select Coach Rob Ball.

The victory propels Toronto Playgrounds (1-0) into a 3:30 p.m. game on Saturday afternoon against an opponent still to be determined.

Here is a game synopsis from TP Cub Reporter “Scoop” Godel:

  • In the five inning game, Toronto Playgrounds had leads of 1-0; 3-0; 6-1; 6-3 and 12-3
  • Despite a five run rally by York in the fifth, TP was never faced with adversity
  • Simon (2) started the game and pitched two scoreless innings while fanning five York batters
  • Campbell  (10) pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed only three earned runs
  • Jamie (2) had a big strikeout to quell the York comeback threat in the fourth
  • John Eric (24) received the Mosquito Select Coaches Game Ball for his disciplined and productive game at the plate. John Eric reached base in all of his four trips to the dish as he earned three walks and hit a huge two RBI double in the fifth that turned out to be very important insurance runs in the victory. He also made a “Perezian” scoop at first base for an inning ending rally killer
  • After Jamie (2) had a two RBI double to the gap in right centre in the third that put TP up 5-0, he also stole home to increase the lead to 6-0
  • Oliver (6) had a hit and and should have had another on a shot in the hole that the York shortstop made a “Ripken” like play on
