Beneath hazy and humid skies this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 3, our TP Rookie Ball Selects defeated the Annette A’s 8-3 in six innings of EBA West Select Loop action.

Runs came at a premium over the course of the first four and a half innings as both teams used their respective defensive prowess to keep each other in check. However, the Toronto Playgrounds offense put the pedal to the metal in the fifth to pull away from the A’s and earn their third victory of the season.

Despite putting two runners on base in the top of the first, Annette was unable to score. The defensive highlight of the inning was a nice catch made by TP shortstop Luca (11), who had to battle the bright glare of the sun to trap a sky high pop up off the bat of Luke (1) of Annette in the webbing of his mitt to record the third out.

TP jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After Oskar (6) reached base on a lead off single, he motored home with the game’s first run on an Annette error. However, some strong defensive play by Annette allowed them to extricate themselves without any further damage.

Oskar (6) went 2 for 5 at the dish while scoring two runs.

The A’s could not find their rhythm with the pitching machine in the top of the second and were unable to score. TP helped itself out with a solid 4-3 putout when second baseman Dexter (4) fielded a hot shot off the bat of Annette’s Cyan (5) and made a quick throw to first baseman Declan (13) to record the second out of the inning.

In the bottom of the second, TP added another run to widen its lead to 2-0. After a one out single by James (35), Jacob (7) delivered a two out RBI single to bring James home.

The Annette offense came to life in the top of the third as they scored a pair to tie the game 2-2.

However, the Rookie Ball Selects answered back with a run in the bottom of the third to retake the lead 3-2. After a lead off double by Declan, Dexter stroked a RBI single to bring him home.

Neither Annette or Toronto Playgrounds could score any runs in the fourth inning. The TP defensive highlight was made by first baseman Declan, who made a nice catch at first on a high pop up off the bat of Annette’s Eric (4) to record the second out. Annette made a pair of 6-3 putouts in their half of the inning to curtail any TP offensive thrust.

James (35) went 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored and a RBI.

The A’s generated three hits in the top of the fifth to tie the game 3-3. With the go ahead run at second, TP quelled the Annette charge with a nice 4-3 putout when second baseman Jacob (7) vacuumed up a hot grounder off the bat of Eric of the A’s and made the throw to first baseman Declan to record the third out.

TP went for the jugular in the bottom of the fifth as they made the most of their opportunities and scored four to retake the lead 7-3.

With one out, Dexter sparked the Rookie Ball Selects offensive machine with a key single. Emmett (3) followed with a RBI double that allowed Dexter to motor all the way home from first with TP’s go ahead run.

James hit an RBI single to drive in Emmett. Oskar followed with a single to put two TP runners on base. At this juncture, Jacob powered a two RBI double that allowed James and Emmett to come homeward bound.

A pair of stellar defensive by Toronto Playgrounds kept the A’s off the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. TP pitcher James fielded a hot shot off the bat of Annette’s Patrick (11) and made a laser throw to first baseman Declan to record the first out of the inning.

With two outs, TP third baseman Luca (11) knocked down a hot liner off the bat of Luke (1) of the A’s and quickly picked up the ball and made a cannon throw to first baseman Declan to record the third out.

TP added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to widen their advantage to 8-3. After Eli (22) had hit a leadoff single, Emmett stroked a one out RBI sacrifice hit to bring him home.

The Rookie Ball Selects (3-5) play their next game on Tuesday, July 9 when they host the Royal York Cardinals at Christie Pits Diamond 3 at 6:30 p.m.
