Game Post composed with files from Matt Byrnes and Vincent Lynch.
Beneath a canopy of hazy and sunny skies this evening, the Giants and Reds played to an exciting 3-3 draw in four innings of Mosquito Division action at Christie Pits Diamond 3.
The Opening Day contest was riveting affair from the first pitch to the final out as the proceedings were dominated by superb pitching and defense from two talented teams. It was a game where runs came at a premium and were duly earned on the field of play.
The Big Red Machine jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. After Alex (12) of the Reds stroked a leadoff double, Daniel (6) followed with a clutch RBI single to bring Alex home.
In the bottom of the second, the Mighty Giants surged to life in dramatic fashion as they scored three to take a 3-1 lead. After Jamie (13) of the Giants reached base on a hit by pitch, James (4) cranked a solid hit into the gap in the outfield. With some aggressive and heads up base running, James ended up with a 2 RBI home run that put the Giants in front 2-1.
Adam (10) followed suit with a towering solo home run shot to right field (that reached the pavement sidewalk near the washrooms) to widen the lead to 3-1.
However, the Big Red Machine rallied with a pair in the top of the fourth to tie the game 3-3. With Nickolas (10) drawing big walk and Joshua (9) stealing second base to keep a Reds rally alive, Jake (13) and Matthew (4) eventually came homeward bound even the proceedings.
Exercising great discipline at the plate, the Giants put two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth. With the game on the line, Reds reliever Alex (12) eventually extinguished the Mighty Giants threat to preserve the tie.
In a postgame media scrum, Giants Head Coach Vincent Lynch expressed satisfaction with the Opening Day result.
“It was fantastic first game with some nice fielding, good pitching and solid hitting.”
Here are some additional game highlights:
- Reds pitchers Matthew (4), Griff (2), Jake (13) and Alex (12) all pitched one inning each, allowing only three runs over four innings in a pitching duel.
- Reds reliever Alex (12) pitched a scoreless bottom of the 4th to secure the tie.
- Special thanks to the Reds new coach, Harry. Harry is a Michigan State student on loan from the East Lansing Lugnuts to the Mosquito Division Reds for the summer.
