The TP Baseball Committee has finalized the schedule for its seventh session of indoor tryouts to fill the positions on its respective Toronto Playgrounds Select Teams for the upcoming 2015 season.

Our seventh series of indoor Select Team Tryouts continue on Saturday February 28, and will include the Select tryout sessions for the Rookie Ball (2006-2007), Mosquito (2004-2005) and Peewee (2002-2003) age divisions.

Players wishing to participate in these indoor Select Team sessions must be registered in our house league baseball program. The Select Team Tryouts will run for a nine week duration from January 17 to March 14. With only three tryout opportunities remaining, Players are reminded that they must participate in a minimum of three tryout sessions in order to be considered for selection to the Select team. The Select Team rosters will be chosen by the coaches by mid-March.

We will be using the large gym at Harbord Collegiate Institute (286 Harbord Street) for our weekly Saturday indoor Select team tryout sessions.

Here is the 2015 TP Select Team Tryout Schedule for Saturday, February 28 at the Harbord Collegiate Institute Gym:

  • 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. > Peewee Select (2002-2003): This time will be for players interested in our Peewee Select  program.
  • 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. > Rookie Ball Select (2006-2007): This time will be for players interested in our Rookie Ball Select program.
  • 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.Mosquito Select (2004-2005): This time will be for players interested in our Mosquito Select  program.

Harbord Collegiate Institute is located on the north side of Harbord Street between Euclid Avenue and Manning Avenue. To enter the school, people must use Door # 5, which is located at the northeast corner of  the school off Euclid Ave. Once you go in that door follow the signs to  the gym. Caretakers have told the Committee that there will be parking available in the underground school lot. The entrance to the lot is off Euclid Ave.  just north of door # 5.

If you are interested in trying out for the select team but cannot make the scheduled tryout, please let us know by return e-mail. If you are coming to the tryouts and haven’t yet dropped your registration form off at Bob Abate, please do not drop the forms off on Saturday morning. Please bring the form to the tryout at Harbord Collegiate instead.

The select teams will play one game a week and have one practice (or some weeks two) in addition to their participation in our house league program. Players who make the select teams but who then do not take part in house league will forfeit their spots.

The Select Team tryouts are open to ALL registered house league players who are interested in playing a more “competitive” brand of baseball. If you’re only interested in playing House League baseball, there is no obligation to participate in the indoor Select tryout sessions. (Evaluations for our House League players will take place in late April.) However, if you’re interested in playing more competitive baseball, we encourage you to come out to the Select Team tryout sessions.

Players will ONLY be allowed to participate in the select tryouts after we have received a completed house league registration for the player, along with either having the full fee paid or having a payment arrangement in place.

The Toronto Playgrounds Baseball Select program is an extension of the house league program. Playing Select gives players the opportunity to play more baseball at a higher skill level without having to make the larger time and financial commitment that is involved with “Rep” baseball. The select team is similar to a “house league all star team.”

Parents and Players are advised that there are tryouts involved for our Select teams, and players have to make the teams. There is a registration fee for the select teams which is in addition to the House League registration fee. The fee will depend upon the number of tournaments the team enters and the type of uniform they decide to use. Players MUST be registered in our house league baseball program in order to tryout for our Select teams.

Additionally, Parents and Players are advised that any player who makes the Select Team MUST fully pay their Select registration fee (and respective House League registration fee) before the start of the Select regular season schedule in order to play for their team. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS.

Parents and Players are also advised that Select players must also participate regularly and appropriately in our house league program. When playing house league games, the players will be expected to wear their house league uniforms, just as they will be expected to wear their select uniforms when playing their select games.

Toronto Playgrounds House League Baseball is looking at being involved in the West Toronto Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Select Loop for the 2015 season. This loop involves teams from Bloordale, Martingrove, Royal York, Weston and York. We are planning to field teams in the Rookie Ball (players born in 2006 and 2007), Mosquito (players born in 2004 and 2005) and Peewee (players born in 2002 and 2003) divisions. Teams will require at least 15 interested and committed players, two or three interested and committed coaches, and at least one parent willing to serve in a manager’s capacity.

There are set nights for select games in each division, and we will be informing you of those as soon as we have confirmed them with the loop organizers.

If you’re interested in participating in the Select program or if you have any other questions please contact us at tpbaseball@gmail.com.
