Beneath a pristine canopy of cool and breezy blue skies, our Toronto Playgrounds Rookie Ball Selects defeated the Weston Wolverines 16-0 in 6 ½ innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Select action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 3 to win their fourth game of the season and remain undefeated.

TP was firing on all cylinders in their home opener as they pacified the pesky Wolverines both offensively and defensively in a lopsided victory. During the proceedings, TP unleashed a twenty-seven hit attack to build a lead that they never surrendered. And when the Weston offense mounted a challenge, the TP defense consistently rose to the occasion and slammed the door shut and turned them away.

With one out and a base runner at first, the Wolverines came away empty handed in the top half of the first after TP second baseman Jordan (1) turned a sweet double play.

In the bottom of the first, Toronto Playgrounds staked themselves to an early 2-0 lead. With two outs, Sam (2) crushed a triple to the deep dish pizza region of the outfield. Jordan followed with a clutch RBI single that allowed Sam to saunter home with the first run of the proceedings.

After Marshall (20) and Desmond (3) stroked respective singles to load the bases, Thomas delivered a RBI single that brought Jordan home to roost.

The pitching machine retired the Weston batting order in three up and three down fashion in the top of the second with 3K efficiency.

TP added two more runs in the bottom of the second to widen its lead to 4-0. With two outs and runners at third and first, Markus (29) muscled a RBI single that plated Dylan (9). Emmett (8) followed with a RBI single that allowed Milo (45) to come homeward bound.

The TP defense shone brightly in the top of the third as they retired the Wolverines in three up and three down fashion to keep them off the scoreboard. Shortstop Dante (19) vacuumed up a pair of slow grounders and hooked up with first baseman Thomas (10) on back to back 6-3 putouts to chalk up the first two outs of the frame.

Then third baseman Liam (17) corralled a slow mosey roller and made a laser throw to Thomas to record a 5-3 putout and bring the curtain down on Weston’s half of the inning.

With resolve, TP utilized five singles in the bottom of the third to tack on three runs and stretch their advantage to 7-0. After Jordan and Marshall delivered back to back singles that put two ducks on the pond, Desmond stroked a RBI single that brought Jordan home.

Thomas would follow with a sacrifice hit that allowed Marshall to motor home with TP’s sixth run.

Following a two out single by Rennick (4) that put two mallards on the lake, Dylan would stroke a grace under pressure RBI single that delivered Desmond home.

In the top of the fourth, the TP defense retired the Weston batting order in the three up and three down fashion once again. Shortstop Dante hooked up with first baseman Rennick on a nifty 6-3 putout to ring up the first out. Next, pitcher Dylan made a nice throw to Rennick on a pretty 1-3 putout to tally the second out of the frame.

TP would tack on another run in the bottom of the fourth to increase its lead to 8-0. After Dante led off the inning with a majestic triple, Milo delivered a RBI sacrifice hit that plated Dante.

Once again, some sweet TP defense quelled a Wolverines insurgency in the top of the fifth to keep them off the scoresheet.

Going for the jugular, TP unleashed a seven hit assault in the bottom of the fifth to add five runs and increase their lead to 13-0. After Liam and Sam led off the frame with a pair of singles to put two runners on base, Marshall powered an one out 2 RBI double to deep centre field that allowed both Liam and Sam to come homeward bound. Desmond would follow with a RBI single that would bring Marshall home to crow.

Following a two out single by Rennick that put two swans on the lake, Dylan would stroke a RBI single that scored Desmond and put TP up 12-0.

Duncan (14) would follow with a clutch RBI double that allowed Rennick to blaze homeward.

In the top of the sixth, the TP D turned away the Wolverines once again and kept them off the scoring ledger.

Toronto Playgrounds would add three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to salt the game away. After Dante and Milo led off the inning with a pair of singles to put two aboard, Markus stroked a RBI single that plated Dante.

With one out and two base runners on the pond, Liam delivered a RBI single that brought Milo homeward. Sam followed with a RBI sacrifice hit that allowed Markus to score.

Taking care of business, the TP defense dispatched the Wolverines in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the seventh to seal the deal.

The TP Rookie Ball Selects (4-0) will play their next EBA Select game on Tuesday, June 14 when they host the Royal York Cardinals at Christie Pits Diamond 3 at 6:30 p.m.
