Beneath a ceiling of warm and humid skies, our Toronto Playgrounds Mosquito Selects defeated the Annette (Major) A’s 16-8 in five innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Select action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2 to win their fourth game of the season and remain undefeated.

The Father’s Day proceeding was an entertaining affair that was contested by two talented and well coached teams. In the end, TP used some solid pitching and stellar defense to stymie the potent Athletics offense and hold them off the scoreboard in the first three frames. This allowed the explosive TP offense to build a sizable 10-0 lead through three innings of play. It was a lead that they would not surrender.

With a little help from his friends, TP southpaw starter Lucas (46) pitched a tidy 1-2-3 top of the first to keep the Athletics off the scoresheet.

In the bottom half of the first, TP jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. After being hit by pitch to lead off the frame, Noah (23) would steal second and advance to third on Charlie’s (7) groundout to short. Pouncing like a barracuda on the loose, Noah would blaze home with the opening run of the game on a wild pitch by Annette.

After a pair of one walks by Jordan (10) and Jayden (30) put two ducks on the pond, Theo (17) would deliver a 2 RBI single to bring them home and give TP a 3-0 advantage.

With Theo on second after a stolen base, Solly (27) followed with a RBI single to plate Theo. Subsequently, Solly would steal a pair of bases in grand theft fashion to reach third and come motoring home on an A’s error.

Annette lefty starter Kieran (18) would strike out one in the first inning.

The TP defense shone brightly in the top of the second as they retired the A’s in 1-2-3 fashion again to keep them off the scoreboard. On the first out, shortstop Jordan sucked up a slow bouncer like a Kirby vacuum cleaner and made a laser throw to first baseman Solly to retire Stefan (15) of Annette in a pretty 6-3 putout.

On the next play, Brayden (21) of the A’s stroked a fly ball to the gap in left-centre field that was destined for extra bases. However, TP centre fielder Ezra (14) stretched high into the air and made a picturesque Kevin Pillar catch in the shoestrings of his glove to chalk up the second out of the frame.

Then TP starter Lucas struck out the next Annette batter looking to bring the curtain down on the Athletics in the second.

In the bottom of the second, TP tacked on four runs to widen their lead to 9-0. After Vince (19) and Lucas walked with one out, Tavaris (55) was hit by pitch to load the bases. Noah followed with a RBI walk to bring in Vince.

With the bases still juiced to the gills, the Athletics defense would perform a faux pas that would allow Noah to move to second and both Lucas and Tavaris to come home roost.

Charlie (7) would follow with a RBI single to plate Noah.

A’s reliever Henry (20) would strike out one to subdue the TP insurgency in the second.

TP reliever Tavaris (55) would strike out two in the top of the third to keep Annette off the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the third, TP added another run to stretch their advantage to 10-0. After leading off the frame with a triple, Theo would blaze home on an Annette error.

With their backs against the wall, the Annete offense surged to life with five hits in the top of the fourth as they scored five to slice the deficit to five. The A’s rally was punctuated by respective 2 RBI singles from Stefan (15) and Brayden (20). Adam (17) iced the rally cake with a RBI single.

In a workmanlike effort, TP reliever Noah (23) would strike out one in the fourth.

TP would reply with a run in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 11-5. After leading off the frame with a walk, Lucas would advance to third on a stolen base and a ground out. An A’s error would allow him to motor home.

Refusing to surrender, the pesky A’s scored three in the top of the fifth to trim the margin to 11-8. A RBI sacrifice hit by Xander (23) and a 2 RBI single by Kieran would bring home the bacon.

TP reliever Cooper (42) would strike out one in the fifth.

However, TP would add five insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to salt the game away. After leading off the frame with a single, Jordan (10) would advance to second on an A’s error. Jayden (30) followed with a RBI single to plate Jordan. Subsequently, another faux pas by Annette would allow Jordan to come home from third to crow.

After Solly delivered a one out double, Cooper and Ezra (14) drew back to back walks to load the bases. Vince and Lucas would follow with respective RBI singles that allowed Solly ans Cooper to come homeward bound. Ezra would bolt home with the final run on another Annette error.

The TP Mosquito Selects (4-0) will play their next EBA Select game on Sunday, June 26 when they play host at Christie Pits Diamond 2 to the Annette Minor A’s at 6:00 p.m.
