THE GRITTY LIZZIES PREVAIL OVER THE PESKY CUBBIES AT CHRISTIE PITS
Under a tranquil ceiling of warm sunny skies, the Lizzies defeated the Cubs 7-3 in five innings of Peewee Division action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2.In an entertaining contest between two talented and well coached teams, the Lizzies used an elixir of strong pitching, solid defense and making the most of their opportunities to eventually prevail for the victory over the pesky Cubs.
The Lizzies jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. After drawing a lead off walk, Jamie (13) would swipe a pair of bases to advance to third. A wild pitch by the Cubs would open the door for Jamie to dart home with the opening run of the game.
Cubs starter Matthew (14) would strike out one in the first to quell the Lizzies insurgency.
Matthew also helped his own cause during the inning with a nice defensive play. With two outs and Lizzies on board at third and second, Matthew uncorked a wild pitch which hit the backstop and ricocheted down the first baseline. As Cubs catcher Shamus (1) scrambled to retrieve the ball, Han (2) made a break for home from third. Just as Shamus made the throw home, Matthew arrived at the plate and made a backhanded tag on a sliding Han to complete the 2-1 putout and chalk up the third out of the frame.
In the bottom of the first, the Cubs would answer with a pair to take a 2-1 lead. With two outs, Tristan (6) and Jack (8) garnered back to back walks to put two ducks on the pond. After Tristan took third on a steal, a wild pitch by the Lizzies would allow Jack to shuffle to second and Tristan to come home with a head first slide and tie the proceedings.
After Maggie (7) and Owen (9) drew back to back walks to load the bases, Matthew stroked a RBI single that brought Jack home with the go ahead run.
Lizzies starter Jamie (13) would strike out two in the first to subdue the Cubs rebellion.
Jamie was also helped out on a nice defensive play from his teammates during the inning. After drawing a walk and stealing second, Cubs leadoff batter Savannah (10) made a brazen bid to steal third. However, Lizzies catcher Han made a laser throw to third baseman Francis (12), who adroitly applied the tag on a sliding Savannah to ring up the 2-5 putout and the first out of the frame.
However, the Lizzies would reply in powerful fashion in the top of the second with four to retake the lead 5-2. Taio (8) would blast a riveting lead off inside the park home run to tie the game.
After KJ (0), Jaelynn (15) and Jamie followed with consecutive walks to load the bases, the Lizzies would execute a triple steal whereby Jamie and Jaelynn moved up respectively to second and third while KJ stole home with the go ahead run.
With two aboard, Han stepped into the batter’s box and delivered a 2 RBI double that allowed Jaelynn and Jamie to come homeward bound.
In a spirited foray on the mound, Cubs reliever Owen (9) would strike out one in the second.
The Cubs would answer with one in the bottom of the second to trim the deficit to two. After Shamus (1) launched a one out triple, Tristan delivered him home with a RBI double.
Lizzies reliever Zenon (9) would strike out three in the second to extinguish the Cubs rally.
In the top of the third, Cubs reliever Savannah (10) would retire the potent Lizzies batting order in 1-2-3 fashion to keep them off the scoresheet.
Savannah was also helped out on a nifty 2-4 defensive putout from her teammates. After getting on base after being hit by pitch, Parker (1) made a bid to steal second. However, Cubs catcher Shamus would make a cannon throw to second baseman Owen, who tagged out the sliding Parker and ring up the second out of the inning.
Lizzies southpaw hurler Jamie would mow down three in the bottom of the third with a John Deere D130 22-HP V-Twin Hydrostatic 42-inch Lawn Tractor to keep the Cubs in the cave and off the scoreboard.
The Lizzies would tack on two insurance runs in the top of the fourth to widen their advantage to 7-3. After drawing a lead off walk, Taio would advance to third on a pair of steals. KJ would follow with a sacrifice hit that plated Taio.
After Elayna (11) stroked a two out double, Jamie delivered a RBI single that allowed Elayna to come home to roost.
Cubs reliever Maggie (7) would strike out two in the fourth to subdue the Lizzies insurgency.
Lizzies reliever Zenon would strike out three with a Toro 50-inch TimeCutter SS5000 Riding Mower in the bottom of the fourth to keep the Cubs paws out of the honey jar.
Cubs reliever Shamus (1) would strike out two in the top of the fifth to keep the Lizzies off the scoreboard.
Shamus was also helped out on a nifty 2-4 defensive putout from his teammates. After stroking a two out single, Francis made a bid to steal second. However, Cubs catcher Maggie would make a supersonic throw to second baseman Julius (0), who tagged out the sliding Francis and chalk up the third out of the inning.
Lizzies closer KJ (0) would strike out two in the bottom of the fifth to keep the Cubs off the scoring ledger and seal the deal on the hard fought victory.
