IN A STICKY NAIL BITER, THE O’s PREVAIL OVER THE SOX AT BICKFORD PARKBeneath a ceiling of hot and humid skies, the Orioles edged the Red Sox 9-8 in four thrilling innings of Mosquito Division action this evening at the Bickford Park South Diamond.
Trailing 8-5, the pesky Red Sox rallied to tie the game in the top of the fourth. After Alex (14) led off the frame with a single and a stolen base, Anthony (2) powered a one out RBI triple to bring Alex homeward and trim the deficit to two.
Following a single by Justin (10) that put two aboard, Vincent (4) stepped into the batter’s box and delivered a 2 RBI double that allowed Anthony and Alex to come home to crow and deadlock the game at 8-8.
After a walk by Owen (3) that put two ducks on the pond, Orioles reliever Justin (3) dug deep into his reserve tank and struck out the next two Red Sox batters to preserve the tie.
In the bottom of the fourth, Oliver (2) led off the O’s half of the inning with a single. After Oliver brazenly stole a pair of bases to advance to third, Duncan (10) stroked a RBI single to bring Oliver home with the Orioles winning run.
With both teams dealing with the challenge of a pea soup layer of very sticky humidity, the proceeding was a well contested affair between two talented and well coached squads.
Orioles starter Oliver (2) struck out one in the top of the first to keep the Red Sox off the scoresheet.
In the bottom of the first, the O’s would feast upon a Mandarin buffet offering of five walks issued by the Red Sox to take an early 4-0 lead. Oliver and Duncan would lead off the frame with back to back walks to put two aboard. A combination of wild pitches, an error and a passed ball by the Sox would open the door for them to eventually come home to roost.
After Julian (7), Justin (3) and Matthew (9) walked to load the bases, Oliver would deliver a two out 2 RBI double that allowed Justin and Matthew to come homeward bound.
In a spirited foray on the mound, Red Sox starter Vincent (4) struck out one Oriole in the first inning.
The Red Sox would reply with a run in the top of the second to trim the shortfall to three. After Anthony, Justin and Vincent led off the inning with consecutive walks to load the bases, Liam (12) drew a one out RBI walk that allowed Anthony to shimmy home with the Red Sox first run of the game.
Orioles reliever Justin would pitch himself out the bases loaded jam in the second by striking out two to subdue the Red Sox insurgency.In the bottom of the second, the O’s would tally another four runs to widen their advantage to 8-1. After Lex (15) singled and Julian was hit by pitch, Justin followed with a single to load the bases. Matthew (9) followed with a one out 2 RBI single that delivered Lex and Julian to come home to chirp.
With two outs and a pair of Orioles nesting on the basepaths, Oliver launched another 2 RBI double that allowed Justin and Matthew to come homeward bound.
In a gritty effort on the hill, Red Sox reliever Liam (12) would strike out two Orioles in the second frame.
Refusing to wave the white flag of surrender, the Red Sox offense surged to life in the top of the third as they scored four to trim the margin to 8-5. Following a lead off by Myles (9), Alex and Anthony would garner back to back walks to load the bases. At this moment, Justin would deliver a RBI single to plate Myles.
Vincent would stroke a RBI single that allowed Alex to come home to rock and roll. With the bases still juiced to the gills, Owen (3) would follow with RBI walk to bring Anthony home.
Subsequently, with the bases remaining loaded, Lucas (11) drew a RBI walk to deliver Vincent home.
In a workmanlike foray, O’s pitcher Oliver would strike out one Red Sox in the third inning.
Red Sox reliever Alex (14) would pitch himself out of mojo jojo bases loaded jam in the bottom of the third by striking out two to keep the Orioles off the scoreboard.
