THE BUCCANEERS PREVAIL OVER THE MIGHTY GIANTS IN AN EPIC TOOTH AND NAIL BATTLE AT CHRISTIE PITS TO PUNCH A TICKET INTO THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME VERSUS THE DODGERS
Under a mystical ceiling of celestial summer skies, the Pirates edged the Giants 8-7 in a riveting five inning semi-final playoff elimination game this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2 to advance to the Peewee Division Championship Game against the Dodgers.
With the game deadlocked 5-5, the Pirates took the bull by the horns in the top of the fifth as they scored three to take an 8-5 lead. After a one out single, Loyan (6) swiped a pair of bases to advance to third. A wild pitch would open the portal for Loyan to bolt homeward with the go ahead run.
Following walks to Piper (3) and Aiden (1) that put two aboard, Liam (5) delivered a grace under pressure 2 RBI double to bring them home.
Giants reliever Ben P. (11) would chalk up a groundout and a strikeout to quell the Bucs mutiny in the fifth.
Ben P. was also helped out mightily on a nice 2-5 putout to bring the top half of the final inning to a close. As Liam made a bid to steal third, Giants catcher Max (10) made a rocket throw to third baseman Sam (15), who adroitly slapped the tag on a siding Liam to thwart his quest for grand thievery.
With their backs to the wall, the Mighty Giants refused to surrender as they mounted a ferocious comeback bid in the bottom of the fifth. Alex (13) would lead off the top of the inning with a wooly mammoth home run blast to the deep dish pizza nether regions of centre field to trim the deficit to two.
After Javert (3) earned a walk and stole two bases to reach third, Ben P. delivered a one out RBI single to bring him home and close the gap to one. Subsequently, Ben P. would swipe a pair of bases to advance to third.
With the potential tying run standing only seventy-five feet away, Pirates reliever Nigel (14) would strike out the next two batters to close out the game and seal the deal on a hard fought semi-final win over the Giants.
From the first pitch to the final out, this proceeding was an intense, well played and highly entertaining affair. It was an epic Peewee Division semi-final game that was contested by two talented and well coached teams, where the players from both teams gave it their all and left everything they had to give on the field of play.
The Buccaneers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After being hit by pitch with one out, Francis (2) proceeded to swipe a pair of bases to position himself at third. Seizing his moment of opportunity, Francis would steal home and score the opening run of the game.
Following a walk to Loyan, Piper delivered a RBI double to bring Loyan home. On the play, Piper overran second and was tagged out by Giants shortstop Javert on a 1-6 putout.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Giants starter Max (10) would strike out the next batter to douse the Pirates insurgency in the first.
In the bottom of the first, the Giants would answer back with four to take a 4-2 lead. After Rowan (8) garnered a one out walk and stole two bases to reach third, Max would stroke a two out RBI single to bring Rowan home with the Giants first run.
Following a walk to Jake C. (5) that put two ducks on the pond, Alex delivered a clutch 2 RBI triple that allowed Max and Jake C. to come homeward bound and propel the Mighty Giants into the lead. Alex would cap off the inning with a steal of home.
In a workmanlike foray on the hill, Pirates starter Piper (3) would strike out two in the bottom half of the first.
The Giants defensive prowess would sparkle in the top of the second as they made two stellar plays to thwart the Bucs efforts to rally in the top of the second. Following Dylan’s (7) leadoff double and steal of third, Ethan (4) would hit a chopper towards the left side of the infield. As Dylan charged for home, Giants shortstop Javert vacuumed up the ball and made a laser throw to catcher Ben P., who tagged out a sliding Dylan to ring up the first out on a nice 6-2 putout.
On the next play, Ethan would dash from first in a bid to steal second. However, Giants catcher Ben P. would make a cannon throw to shortstop Javert, who tagged out Ethan to chalk up the second out on a nifty 2-6 putout.
With one aboard, Giants reliever Sam (15) would induce a 1-3 putout to bring the top half of the second to a close.
Pirates reliever Nigel would strike out two in the bottom of the second to keep the Giants off the scoring ledger. The Giants were also denied a run in the inning when their base runner was ruled out for not sliding at home.
The Buccaneers would tally one in the top of the third to trim the shortfall to one. Following a leadoff single, Francis would steal his way to third. A balk call would allow Francis to shimmy homeward and slice the margin to 4-3.
Giants southpaw reliever Sam would settle in and induce a pair of 6-3 groundouts [shortstop Ben P. to first baseman Alex] and a strikeout to bring the shower curtain down on the top half of the third.
Pirates reliever Francis (2) would strike out a pair in the bottom of the third to keep the Giants off the scoring abacus.
Francis was also helped out during the frame with a nice defensive play from his fellow Buccaneers. After garnering a one out walk and steal of second, Eamon (1) made a bid to steal third base. However, Pirates catcher Piper made a cruise missile throw to third baseman Ethan, who applied the tag on a sliding Eamon to notch the 2-5 putout and the second out.
In the top of the fourth, the Bucs would rally for two to take a 5-4 lead. After Dajuan walked and Liam (5) was hit by pitch to open the inning, Nigel drew a walk to load the bases. A Giants faux pas would allow Liam and Nigel to move up a base and Dajuan to zoom home with the tying run.
Dylan followed and delivered a RBI double to bring Liam home with the go ahead run.
With no outs and two aboard, Giants reliever Ben P. would strike out the next three batters to extinguish the Pirates insurrection in the fourth.
Trailing by one, the Mighty Giants would rally with a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the proceedings 5-5. Following a one out walk, Sam would swipe a pair of bases and come home with the tying run on a dropped third strike to Max.
Pirates pitcher Piper would strike out three in the fourth to quell the Giants insurgency.
