Beneath a canopy of warm and cloudy skies, the Toronto Playgrounds Bantam Selects defeated the Weston Wolverines 16-3 in four innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Bantam Select Tournament action this morning at Dominico Field at Christie Pits.

After a razor thin 8-7 loss to the Martingrove White Sox  yesterday evening to open the playoff round, TP was thrust into a must win situation to continue their journey at the tourney. [Teams participating in this year’s EBA playoffs are operating under the double knockout formula, whereby a team with two losses would be eliminated from further contention in the tournament.] With their backs against the wall, TP answered the clarion call with a dominating victory over the Wolverines.

In the top of the first, TP jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. After a leadoff walk and stolen base by Joseph (11), Alex (6) surprised the Wolverines defence with a bunt single that put two runners on base. Daniel (50) followed with a RBI sacrifice fly ball to right field that allowed Joseph to motor home from third with the opening run of the game.

Harris (12) takes advantage of a Weston error in the third inning to slide home safely and give TP a 3-2 lead.

Weston starter Caleb (08) would strikeout one in the first to quell the TP insurgency.

TP starter Alden (7) set down the Wolverines with 1-2-3 efficiency in the bottom of the first on a pair of pop outs and a strikeout.

Wolverines starter Caleb would chalk up a pop out and a pair of strikeouts in the top of the second to keep TP off the scoring ledger.

The Wolverines clawed back with a pair in the bottom half of the second to take a 2-1 lead. With one out, Caleb would reach base on a TP error. After Caleb stole second, KJ (28) delivered a RBI single to bring him home with the tying run.

Alex (6) delivers a RBI single during TP’s eleven run uprising in the third frame. In three at bats, Alex went 2 for 3 to spark TP with a run scored and a two RBI’s.

Alden got some sterling defensive help from his friends during the inning. TP centre fielder Joseph battled the sunlight to make a nice over the head catch on a deep fly ball off the bat of JD (54) to tally the first out. And Second baseman Francis (2) and first baseman Thomas (8) combined for a pair of pretty 4-3 putouts to stem Weston’s momentum.

TP would send a buffet line of seventeen batters to the dish in the top of the third and answer back with an eleven run fusillade to retake the lead 12-2. Following a pair of walks by Alexander (22) and Harris (12) to leadoff the frame, Ben (4) bunted the ball towards the pitching mound. On the play, Weston would commit a major faux pas that allowed Alexander and Harris to come homeward with the tying and go ahead runs.

Following a walk by Jake (27) that put two ducks on the pond, Francis stroked a single. On the play, the Weston defence committed an error that allowed Francis to advance to second and both Ben and Jake to come home to crow.

After allowing a run, TP reliever Zenon (9) sealed the deal on the victory in the fourth,
