THE RED CARDINALS PREVAIL OVER TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS AT CHRISTIE PITS

As Royal York Red catcher Payton (3) awaits the throw from first base, Momo (11) scores a dramatic run for TP in the fourth inning after hustling all the way home from second base on a sacrifice groundout by Cooper (3).

Beneath a blanket of warm and tranquil skies, the Royal York Red defeated the Toronto Playgrounds Minor Mosquito Selects 10-8 in five innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Mosquito Select Loop action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2.

The proceeding was an entertaining and well played affair that was contested between two talented teams. In the end, the disciplined Red Cardinals played a solid all around game as they made the most of their opportunities to take home the prize.

In the top half of the first, Royal York staked themselves to an early 3-0 lead. Following a leadoff single and stolen base by Addison (9), Meg (6) stroked a one out RBI single to bring Addison home with the opening run of the game.

Dylan (10) launches a RBI double to propel TP’s two run surge in the second inning.

With focus and guile, Royal York starter Taylor (4) chalked up a strikeout, fly out and a groundout in the first inning to keep the TP offence in check.

The Red Cardinals added two more to their tally in the top of the second to stretch their lead to 5-1. Following a leadoff single by Alejandra (22), Logan (1) garnered a walk that put two ducks on the pond. Addison followed with a one out two RBI single to bring Alejandra and Logan home.

After starter William had struck out two before exiting the game, TP reliever Cody (11) came in from the bullpen and entered the fray to ring up a strikeout and snuff out the Red Cardinals rebellion.

TP answered back with a pair in the bottom portion of the second to slice the gap to 5-3. After a two out single by Cooper (3), Dylan (10) launched a grace under pressure two RBI double to bring Cooper home to crow. Subsequently, a Royal York wild pitch and an error opened the portal for Dylan to come homeward and do the shimmy, shimmy, shake.

Unfazed, Royal York starter Taylor chalked up three groundouts in the second to extinguish the TP uprising.

Not to be outdone, the Red Cardinals answered back with a run in the top of the third to increase their advantage to 6-3. After being hit by pitch to leadoff the inning, Nadia (7) exacted a measure of revenge by stealing second base. Julia followed with a RBI double that brought Nadia home.

TP reliever Cody would tally a strikeout in the third frame to keep the potent Royal York batting order in check. Cody also helped himself out immeasurably with a nice Gold Glove play during the inning. With one out and Cardinal baserunners at third and first, Logan seared a screaming hot tamale line drive back towards the pitching mound. However, Cody snagged the hot shot in the webbing of his trusty mitt to tally the second out. Noticing that the Royal York baserunner had strayed far away from first during the play, Cody made a lightning throw to first baseman William to ring up the 1-3 inning ending double play.

Joel (12) connects for a RBI single during TP’s two run rally bid in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the third, TP replied with two runs to close the margin to 6-5. After a leadoff single, Adam (20) swiped a pair of bases with Grand Theft bravado to advance to third. Cody followed with a RBI double to bring Adam home.

Following Cody’s steal of third, Jiri delivered a sacrifice hit that allowed Cody to come homeward with the bacon.

Cool as a cucumber, Cardinals starter tallied a groundout, pop out and a strikeout in the third to preserve Royal York’s one run lead.

Exercising discipline at the plate, Royal York feasted upon a Mandarin buffet serving of five walks in the top half of the fourth as they scored four to stretch their lead to 10-5. Following a pair of walks by Addison and Taylor that put two otters on the pond, Meg delivered a RBI single to bring Addison home.

Following a pair of two out walks by Payton (3) and Alejandra that reloaded the bases, Logan drew a bases loaded RBI walk to bring Jamie home from third.

Dealing the heat, TP reliever Milo (27) mowed down the Red Cardinals in three up and three down fashion with 3 K’s in the fifth frame.

With two outs, TP reliever Milo (27) entered the fray with the bases juiced to the gills and recorded a clutch strikeout to extinguish the Red Cardinals insurrection.

TP would respond with a run in the bottom of the fourth to trim the shortfall to four. After a one out walk, Momo (18) would advance to second base on a steal. As Cooper’s slow chopping sacrifice hit rolled towards first, Momo turned on the Learjet afterburners and blazed home from second to score a dramatic, chitty, chitty, bang, bang run.

Royal York reliever Jamie (15) would tally a groundout and two strikeouts in the fourth to quell the TP mutiny.

With authority, TP reliever Milo retired the Red Cardinals batting order in three up and three down fashion in the top of the fifth with three emphatic K’s.

Refusing to throw in the towel, TP rallied for a pair in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to 10-8. Following a one out single by Milo, Adam and Cody drew back to back walks to load the bases. Jiri followed with a fielder’s choice that allowed Milo to score from third.
