IN AN ALL TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS AFFAIR, THE MAJORS PREVAIL OVER THE MINORS IN THEIR EBA MOSQUITO SELECT LOOP SEASON OPENER AT CHRISTIE PITS TO EARN THEIR FIRST VICTORY OF THE 2019 CAMPAIGN

Aron (14) sparked the TP Major Mosquito Select attack by going 3 for 3 [double, two singles] at the dish against the TP Minor Mosquito Selects, with two runs scored and three RBI’s.

Beneath a sombre duvet of warm blue skies, the Toronto Playgrounds Major Mosquito Selects defeated the Toronto Playgrounds Minor Mosquito Selects 20-2 in four innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Mosquito Select Loop play this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2.

The season opening proceeding for both squads was an entertaining contest between two talented and well coached teams. In the end, the gritty TP Majors prevailed for their first victory of 2019 campaign through a combination of solid pitching (which stifled the pesky TP Minors batting order) and making the most of their offensive opportunities.

In the top half of the first, TP Major Mosquito starter Momo (18) mowed down the TP Minors in 1-2-3 fashion on three sizzling strikeouts to keep them off the scoring ledger.

Exercising discipline at the dish in the bottom of the first, the TP Majors parlayed five walks and two hits into an early 6-0 lead. Following a leadoff walk, Momo swiped a pair of bases to advance to third. After Charlie Z. (8) drew a walk that put two ducks on the pond, the TP Majors executed a double steal which advanced Charlie Z. to second and brought Momo home with the first run of the game.

After Cooper (3) and Milo (27) drew back to back walks to load the bases, Dylan S. (10) hit into a fielder’s choice that moved Cooper to third, erased Milo at second and brought Charlie Z. home. A subsequent TP Minor error would allow Cooper to swoosh home with another run.

With Dylan S. standing at third after swiping a pair of bases, William (33) followed with a walk that put two swans on the lake. The TP Majors executed a double steal that advanced William to second and brought Dylan S. homeward. During a theft of third by William, the TP Minors committed a faux pas that allowed William to bolt home with their fifth run of the inning.

Following a two out double by Aron (14), Rocco (99) delivered a clutch RBI single to bring Aron home to roost.

Shaken, but not stirred, TP Minor Mosquito starter Hudson (18) tallied a pair of groundouts and a strikeout in the first frame.

The TP Minor Mosquitoes would threaten in the top of the second by getting two runners on base courtesy of a pair of walks. However, TP Majors reliever Charlie Z. (8) rung up three strikeouts to leave the Minors stranded and vanquish the threat.

Feasting upon a Mandarin Buffet serving of four walks, the TP Major Mosquito Selects added another four runs to their tally in the bottom portion of the second to increase their lead to 10-0. After a one out walk by Momo, Charlie Z. delivered a sweet RBI triple that brought Momo home with the peameal bacon. A subsequent dropped third strike would erase Cooper at first base and bring Charlie Z. home with a run.

Milo followed by smoking a two out solo inside the park home run shot down the first baseline.

Following a conga line procession of walks by Dylan S., William and Julian (20) that loaded the bases, Aron stroked a RBI single to bring Dylan S. home to crow.

With unyielding grit and resolve, TP Minor Mosquito Select reliever Chase (23) struck out three in the second frame to bring the curtain down on the inning.

Refusing to surrender, the TP Minors battled back in the top of the third. After a leadoff walk by Hudson, Alex (65) reached base on a dropped third strike that put two mallards on the pond. Sawyer (43) followed with a one out RBI single that advanced Alex to third and brought Hudson home with the TP Minor Mosquitoes first run.

Sawyer (43) delivers a RBI single for the TP Minor Mosquito Selects in the top of the third inning.

Rattled, but nonplussed, TP Major Mosquito reliever Cooper (3) struck out three in the third to douse the threat.

The TP Majors answered back with a pair in the bottom half of the third to widen their advantage to 12-1. Charles (11) and Charlie Z. would come homeward to do the shimmy, shimmy, shake.

TP Minor reliever Ben (15) would tally three groundouts to close out the third inning.

In never say die fashion, the TP Minor Mosquitoes continued to battle in the top of the fourth. After consecutive walks by Chase, Julian (77) and Henry K. (13) that loaded the bases, Ben drew a RBI walk that allowed Chase to come home to do the watusi.

Digging deep into his reserve tank, TP Major Mosquito reliever Charles (11) rung up three K’s to end the TP Minor comeback attempt.

In the bottom of the fourth, the TP Majors sent thirteen batters to the plate and scored eight insurance runs to salt the victory away.

The TP Major Mosquito Selects (1-0) will resume action on the EBA Mosquito Select circuit on Saturday (May 11) afternoon when they host the Annette Red at Christie Pits Diamond 2 at 3:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, the TP Minor Mosquito Selects (0-1) will travel to Martingrove Gardens Park on Sunday (May 12) afternoon to battle the Martingrove Grey at 3:30 p.m.
