Beneath a duvet of warm and tranquil summer skies, the Royal York Red defeated the Toronto Playgrounds Minor Peewee Selects 11-1 in five innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Peewee Select Loop action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2.

Taking tiger mountain by strategy, Royal York staked itself to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first. After Charlie (31) stroked a one out single, Declan (13) drew a walk that put two aboard. Aiden (2) followed with a two RBI single that brought Charlie and Declan home with the opening runs of the game.

After Aiden had swiped his way around the horn to third base, Brendan (3) delivered a RBI single to bring him homeward. Following a TP error and stolen base that advanced him to third, Brendan took advantage of a wild pitch to blaze homeward with a run.

Following a walk and stolen base by Cian (11), Sam (38) stroked a clutch two out RBI single that delivered him home.

With a dollop of spit and polish, TP starter James (8) tallied two strikeouts and a groundout in the first frame to quell the Cardinals uprising.

In the bottom half of the first, Royal York starter Declan retired TP in order courtesy of two groundouts and a sweet defensive play. After Devon (16) had stroked a two out single and stolen a pair of bases to reach third base, the Cardinals defence erased him on a nifty 1-5-2 rundowm that brought the curtain down on the inning.

With two outs, Royal York catcher Jake (1) tags out TP baserunner Devon (16) to complete a dramatic 1-5-2 putout that brought the curtain down on the first inning.
Royal York starter Declan (13) threw four solid innings to pick up the victory for the Cardinals. Declan surrendered only one run while striking out six TP batters.

Royal York tallied another five spot in the top of the second to increase their advantage to 10-0. After a leadoff walk by Jake (1) and a single by Charlie put runners at second and first, the Cardinals executed a successful double steal. On the play, a TP faux pas allowed Charlie to advance to third and brought Jake home with a run.

In a chitty, chitty, bang, bang play, Jake (1) eludes the tag of TP catcher Raywat (11) to score a dramatic run for Royal York in the second inning.

Following a one out walk by Aiden that put two ducklings on the pond, Cian delivered a clutch two out three run woolly mammoth home run over the chain linked fence in left field. Upon reaching home, Cian was mobbed by his jubilant Cardinals teammates, who had emptied their first base dugout to congratulate him on his feat.

As Meg (6) slides into the base with a successful theft of third, the throw to nab her would sail away allowing Meg to come homeward during the Cardinals five run explosion in the second inning.

After stroking a single and advancing to second base on a TP error, Meg (6) brazenly swiped third with ornithological authority. A TP faux pas on the play allowed Meg to fly home with another Red Bird run.

With true grit fortitude, TP starter James ended the Royal York coup d’état in the second inning with a pair of strikeouts and a nice defensive gem from his friends.

In true grit effort, TP starter James (8) struck out four Royal York batters during his two inning stint against the Cards.

With two outs and Cardinals at third and second, Jake slashed a line drive to centre field. As Sam (38) bolted homeward from third, TP centrefielder Liam (1) scooped up the ball and made a laser throw to catcher Raywat (11). As Sam scrambled back to third base, Raywat made a bazooka throw to third baseman Devon, who tagged out Sam to ring up the pretty 8-2-5 putout.

Toronto Playgrounds would threaten in the bottom of the second after Goran (43) garnered a walk and stolen base to get into scoring position. However, Royal York starter Declan vanquished the threat courtesy of a groundout, strikeout and a Gold Glove play from his defence. With two outs and Goran on third, James scorched a hot tamale line drive between third and second. However, Cardinals shortstop Cian snagged the scorching liner in the shoestrings of his trusty mitt to chalk up the third out.

TP reliever Ben (6) entered the fray from the bullpen in the top portion of the third frame and tallied a lineout and two strikeouts to keep the Red Birds perched in their nest and off the scoring ledger.

TP reliever Ben (6) threw three stellar innings against Royal York where he surrendered only one run, allowed no hits, while striking out two Cardinals.

In the bottom of the third, TP threatened again after Kesh (98) reached base on a single and stolen base. Nonplussed, Royal York starter Declan struck out three to keep TP off the scoring abacus.

With 1-2-3 efficiency, TP reliever Ben kept the Cards off the scoresheet in the top of the fourth. In addition to a sterling strikeout by Ben, TP turned in a pair of sweet defensive plays during the inning. Battling the darkness descending upon the diamond, Ben made a nice catch on an eight mile high pop up off the bat of Cian to chalk up the first out. That was followed by a Gold Glove effort by TP centrefielder Niko (2), who made a snow cone catch on a deep fly ball off the bat of Meg to ring up the second out.

Refusing to go quietly into the din of the night, TP battled back with a run in the bottom of the fourth to break the goose egg. After Liam garnered a one out walk, Devon stroked a single that put two capybaras on the diamond. Subsequently, with runners on third and second, TP would take advantage of a lapse by the Royal York defence as Liam stole home to score a run.

Unfazed, Cardinals starter Declan struck out two in the fourth to subdue the TP rally bid.

Aiden (2) follows through on a RBI hit for Royal York in the fifth inning. Aiden sparked the Cardinals attack with a run scored and three RBI’s against TP.

Royal York answered back with an insurance run in the top of the fifth to secure its lead at 11-1. After Dylan drew a leadoff walk and Jake was hit by pitch, Declan garnered a one out walk to load the bases. Aiden followed and hit into a fielder’s choice that erased Jake at third and allowed Dylan to come homeward with the peameal bacon.

Along with a little help from his friends, Royal York reliever Brendan rang up a strikeout in the bottom of the fifth to seal the deal on the Red Birds victory.

The Cardinals defence turned in a pair of nifty defensive plays during the inning to stymie the TP comeback bid. Brendan helped his cause when he picked off a wayfaring TP baserunner to tally the first out. Then the Royal York D erased another TP runner on a 1-5-2 rundown play to chalk up the second out.

With the conclusion of the regular season, the TP Minor Peewee Selects (2-11-1) begin their playoff journey at the 2019 edition of the EBA Peewee Select Championship Tournament on Friday (August 9) night when they travel to Connorvale Park to battle the Weston Wolverines at 8:15 p.m.
