WITH ROUND ROBIN PLAYOFF VICTORIES AGAINST BLOORDALE AND ROYAL YORK, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS EARNS A SUNDAY SEMI-FINAL BERTH AT SMYTHE PARK

With the completion of round robin playoff action tonight, the Toronto Playgrounds Varsity Selects have earned a Semi-Final elimination round playoff berth at the 2019 Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Varsity Select Championship Tournament.

TP finished the round robin portion of the tourney with a not too shabby 2-1 record. As such, they will play an 12:00 noon semi-final elimination game late tomorrow (August 11) morning at Smythe Park. TP’s opponent in the semi-final showdown will be the winner of the 9:00 a.m. quarter-final elimination contest between the Bloordale Bombers and York Riverdogs. The Martingrove White Sox received a bye into the championship round after completing the round robin with a 3-0 record.

Toronto Playgrounds began the tournament on Friday night at Dominico Field with a dominating 13-4 six inning victory over Bloordale. TP starter Cormac (54) pitched a complete game to stymie the potent Bombers batting order. Meanwhile, the TP offence utilized twelve steals and ten hits to bury Bloordale and win its first round robin game.

With the winds in its sails, TP prevailed 8-4 over Royal York this evening at Sentinel Park. In a stellar five inning effort, TP starter Andrew (6) limited the Red Birds to only four runs while striking out seven Cardinals. The TP offence scored six big runs in the top half of the first inning and never had to look back in the rear view mirror. When the dust had finally settled on the base paths, TP had cranked out seven key hits versus Royal York to tally its second round robin victory.

In their final round robin proceeding late tonight, the Martingrove White Sox rallied with eleven runs in the final frame to usurp TP 14-4 in a five inning affair at Sentinel Park. Down 3-0, a nitty gritty TP team rallied back with four runs in the fourth to take a slender tenderloin 4-3 lead. In an exceptional foray on the hill, TP starter Nolan (24) held the high octane Martingrove offence to only three runs in the first four frames.

Additional updates to follow as they become available.
