UNLEASHING A TWENTY-TWO HIT BARRAGE IN THE LATTER THREE INNINGS, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS COLLAR THE RIVERDOGS TO EARN THEIR FOURTH EBA SELECT LOOP VICTORY
Game Post composed by Scoop GerbilBeneath a ceiling of warm and breezy skies, our Toronto Playgrounds Rookie Ball Selects defeated the York Riverdogs 14-0 in 6 ½ innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Select action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 3.
For the first three and a half innings, a gusty breeze was playing tricks with the JUGS pitching machine and affecting the hitting abilities of both teams. TP and York were unable to generate any runs for the first 3½ frames as both squads were only able to connect on a total of five hits combined. However, the Toronto Playgrounds offense found its rhythm in the bottom of the fourth as it began a relentless twenty-two hit assault over the next three innings to bury the Riverdogs in a total team victory.
After a lead off single by Jordan W. (1), Jordan L. (10) crushed a RBI triple to bring J.W. home with the first run of the game. Sammy P. (11) followed with a RBI single to plate J.L.
Next, Sam (2) and Rennick (4) delivered back to back singles to load the bases. Michael (12) followed with RBI single to bring Sammy P. home to roost. With the bases still juiced, Christian (7) brought Sam home on a fielder’s choice to extend the TP lead to 4-0. Subsequently, Desmond (3) would hit a RBI single that allowed Michael to boogie home with the final run of the frame.
York went down in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the fifth. However, the inning’s big highlight was a Gold Glove unassisted double play executed by TP first baseman Sam. With one out and Marcus (2) on first, Luca (11) lashed a hot tamale screaming line drive down the first base line that Sam snared in the shoestrings of his mitt for the second out. Then Sam stepped on first to force out Marcus, who had strayed too far away for the third out.
Toronto Playgrounds continued the hit parade in the bottom of the fifth as it pounded out six hits and scored three runs to widen its advantage to 8-0. With one out and two ducks on the pond, Sam delivered a RBI single that brought J.L. home. Rennick would follow suit with a RBI single that plated Sammy P.
After a single by Michael that loaded the bases, Christian stroked a RBI single that allowed Sam to waltz home.
Despite a lead off single by Darren A. (8), the Riverdogs went down quietly in the top of the sixth.
Going for the jugular, TP unleashed a vicious eight hit attack in the bottom of the sixth to score six insurance runs and widen its lead to 14-0. After a lead off single by Desmond, Zev (19) would deliver him home with a one out RBI single. With Zev at third, Jordan W. stroked a RBI single that plated Zev and put TP up 10-0.
Following a single by Jordan L. that put two runners on base, Sammy P. hit a RBI single that scored J.W. Next, Sam and Rennick followed with a back to back RBI singles that respectively allowed J.L. and Sammy P. to come homeward bound. Ahead 13-0, Christian would bring Sam home on fielder’s choice.
Refusing to accept their fate, York valiantly battled to the end in the top of the seventh. However, the solid TP Wall of Sound Defense rose to the challenge as it kept the Riverdogs off the scoreboard.
TP Pitcher Desmond corralled a hot shot off the bat of Shamar (23) and made a lightning throw to first baseman Sam to complete a nice 1-3 play for the first out.
With one out and York base runner at second, TP third baseman Malcolm (18) vacuumed up a sharp hit off the bat of Jayden (10) and made a quick throw to shortstop Jordan W. at third base to tag out Spencer (5) for the second out.
And with two outs and runners at second and first, shortstop J.W. scooped up a hard hit ball off the bat of Lucas (21) and hustled over to second base to force out a sliding Casey (12) to record the final out of the game.
After completing a three game homestand at Christie Pits, the TP Rookie Ball Selects (4-2) will now hit the road for their next five EBA Select Loop games. TP will journey to Lambton Kingsway Park to play against the Royal York Cardinals next Tuesday, June 23 at 6:30 p.m.
