Beneath a layer of sunny skies on Canada Day, the Weston Wolverines defeated our Toronto Playgrounds Peewee Selects 14-5 in four innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Select action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2.

Weston jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After Juno (22) reached base on a fielder’s choice, Juan Daniel (50) crushed a two out RBI double off the chain linked fence in centre field to deliver Juno home with the opening run of the game. Caleb (11) followed with a RBI single to bring Juan Daniel home to roost.

With a little help from his friends, TP Peewee Select starter Aaron (54) struck out one during the inning to extinguish the Wolverines insurgency.

Toronto Playgrounds answered the initial salvo by scoring a run in the bottom of the first to trim the deficit to one. After Jake (30) had garnered a two out walk and stolen second, Nigel (20) cashed him in with a RBI single.

With some solid defensive play by his teammates during the frame, Weston starter Daniel (20) subdued the TP rebellion.

The pesky Wolverines replied with a run in the top of the second to stretch their lead to 3-1. With two outs, Julio (48) drew a walk and Kenneth (6) doubled to put two ducks on the pond. Edwin (3) followed with a clutch RBI single to plate Julio.

With determination, Aaron struck out two during the inning to quell the Weston uprising.

The Wolverines defense shone brightly in the bottom of the second as they kept TP off the scoresheet.

In the top of the third, Weston tacked on another run to widen their advantage to 4-1. After Juno led off the inning with a single, Juan Daniel delivered a RBI single to bring him home.

TP starter Aaron struck out one during the frame to douse the Wolverines attack.

The TP defense shone majestically during the inning on a sweet 8-6-4 putout play when Juan Daniel daringly attempted to stretch his single into a double. However, centre fielder Leandro (10) quicklyretrieved the ball and made a strong throw to shortstop Nigel, who pivoted and made a laser throw to second baseman Harris (12), who adroitly applied the tag on a sliding Juan Daniel to record the first out of the frame.

The TP offense surged to life in the bottom of the third as they rallied with three to tie the game 4-4. After Alden (7) singled and Daniel (50) to lead off the inning, Leandro delivered a sacrifice hit to bring Alden home.

Will (14) followed with a one out RBI single to allow Daniel to blaze home and trim the shortfall to one. Subsequently, after stealing a pair of bases, Will would motor home with the tying run on a Weston error.

However, the Wolverines offense growled mightily in the top of the fourth as they sent fifteen batters to the plate and scored ten runs to take a 14-4 lead. Going for the jugular, Weston took advantage of seven walks, an error and five hits to bury TP. Keying the Wolverine attack were respective 2 RBI singles from Juan Daniel and Daniel.

Toronto Playgrounds would gamely rally for a run in the bottom of the fourth to trim the margin to 14-5. After Daniel stroked a two out single, he proceeded to swipe two bases to reach third. Daniel would pounce upon a Weston error to come homeward bound.

Wolverines reliever Caleb (11) would strike out two in the fourth to seal the deal on the victory.

The TP Peewee Selects (2-4) will play host to the Annette A’s at Christie Pits Diamond 2 in their next EBA Select Loop game on Wednesday, July 8 at 7:00 p.m.
