WITH ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH GUSTO, THE ROCKIES PREVAIL OVER THE EXPOS AT BICKFORD PARK
Beneath a blanket of hazy and humid skies, the Rockies topped the Expos 7-2 in four innings of Peewee Division action this evening at the Bickford Park diamond.
In an entertaining proceeding, runs came at a premium as both teams scored only a total of five runs through 3 ½ innings of play. In the end, the final score was not truly reflective of a well played game that was a tight and low scoring affair. Ahead 3-2, the Rockies scored four insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull away for the victory.
The Expos threatened in the top of the first by loading the bases on a pair of walks and a single. However, Rockies starter Rahim (2) found the groove and struck out three to leave the bases stranded and keep the Expos off the scoresheet.
With authority, Expos starter Adam (1) struck out three in 1-2-3- fashion in the of the first to keep the Rockies off the scoreboard.
Rockies reliever Leandro (5) struck out one in the top of the second to keep the Expos off the scoring ledger.
In the bottom of the second, the Rockies snapped the scoreless tie as they scored three to jump out to a 3-0 lead. After Griff (11) and Leandro garnered a pair of walks to lead off the inning, Matthew (10) stroked a RBI single to bring Griff home with the first run of the game.
With one out and runners at third and second, Alden (7) delivered a sacrifice hit that allowed Leandro to come home to roost. Subsequently, Matthew would seize the moment and brazenly steal home uncontested to score another run.
Expos starter Adam would fan two during the inning to quell the Rockies uprising.
Rockies reliever Alden (7) would mow down two in the top of the third to keep the Expos off the scoring abacus.
With a little help from his friends, Expos reliever Taras (9) kept the Rockies off the scoresheet in the bottom of the third.
The highlight of the inning was a sweet 4-6 double play turned by the Expos. With one out and a pair of Rockies at second and first, second baseman Alexia (3) snared a hot tamale liner off the bat of Rahim in the shoestrings of her glove to record the second out. Noticing that the Rockies base runner had strayed too far from second base, Alexia made a laser throw to shortstop Adam, who stepped on the base for the force out and the third out of the frame.
Refusing to surrender, the Expos gamely donned their rally caps in the top of the fourth and scored two to trim the deficit to one. After Adam, Ella (8) and Cameron (15) garnered walks to load the bases, Alexia delivered a clutch one out RBI single to bring Adam home with the Expos first run of the game.
With the bases still juiced to the gills, Haydn (11) followed suit with a RBI single that allowed Ella to motor home and trim the margin to 3-2.
Shaken, but not stirred, Rockies reliever Teddy (12) found the groove and struck out the next two batters to leave the bases stranded and extinguish the Expos gallant rally.
The Rockies would tack on four insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth to seal the deal on a hard fought win over the pesky Expos. After Thomas (9) singled and Griff walked to put two ducks pn the pond, Leandro stroked a one out RBI single to plate Thomas. An Expos error would allow Griff to speed home and extend the Rockies lead to 5-2.
Matthew would follow with a RBI single that allowed Leandro to scoot homeward. After a walk to Jake (4) put two Rockies on the basepaths, Alden delivered a sacrifice hit that allowed Matthew to come homeward bound with the final run of the game.
The Expos defense shone brightly once again in the bottom of the fourth in a well executed rundown play. After Isaac (13) had led off the frame with a single, he was caught in no man’s land between second and first when he wandered too far away from first base. Expos second baseman Juan and first baseman Adam exercised patience and skill in eventually running Isaac down and tagging him out at second to record the first out of the frame.
