THE BUCCANEERS STYMIE THE GO GO LIZZIES TO SEIZE THE GOLD DOUBLOONS OF SWEET VICTORY AT BICKFORD PARK
Beneath a thick sheath of hazy and humid skies, the Pirates defeated the Lizzies 9-4 in 4 ½ innings of Peewee Division action this evening at Bickford Park.
Lizzies Game Summary by Mike Lapenna
- Another hot evening, for the temperature and the Pirates.
- Superb defence helped the Pirates shut down the hit loving Lizzies.
- The Pirates pulled off two innings of three up and three down including one inning with only 3 pitches!
- Lots of hitting by the Lizzies but not enough in the gaps.
- The Lizzies did well with catching fly balls (four for outs) but fielding ground hits, not so much.
- Disciplined defense won the day for the Pirates as they came out on top.
- Can’t wait to see what the Lizzies focus on in the next practice 🙂
Bonus Lizzies & Pirates Game Report by Scoop Gerbil
With a little help from his friends, Pirates starter Francis (11) retired the Lizzies in the top of the first to keep them off the scoresheet.
The Bucs would jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After singling to lead off the inning, Alex (2) would advance to third on an error and a stolen base. Zenon (8) would stroke a RBI single to deliver Alex home with the opening run of the game.
With a pair of Pirates on the basepaths, Lizzies starter Michael (7) would strike out two to subdue the Bucs insurgency.
Pirates reliever Zenon (8) would set down the Lizzies in 1-2-3 fashion on a groundout and two pop ups in the top of the second to keep them off the scoreboard.
The Buccaneers offense parlayed four hits into four runs in the bottom of the second to widen their lead to 5-0.
After singling to lead off the frame, Myles (7) would steal a pair of bases to reach third. Francis (11) followed with a walk to put a pair of Pirates on the corners. Aiden (14) stepped into the batter’s box and stroked a RBI single to plate Myles. An ensuing Lizzies error would allow Francis to score from third.
With one out, Alex M. (9) delivered a RBI single that allowed Aiden to come home to roost. After Alex M. reached third on a pair of stolen bases, Aaron (6) stroked a RBI single to plate Alex M.
In a spirited effort on the mound, Lizzies reliever Julian (15) would strike out one and induce a pop up out during the second inning.
The Lizzies offense surged to life in the top of the third as they patiently feasted upon five walks and two hits to cut the margin to 5-4.
After Gabriel (1), Michael and Molly (6) drew consecutive one out walks to load the bases, Leo (10) drew a RBI walk that allowed Gabriel to mosey home with the Lizzies first run of the proceedings.
Roland (9) would step up and deliver a clutch 2 RBI single that allowed Michael and Molly to come homeward bound.
After Julian (15) drew a walk to reload the bases, Jian (8) would stroke a RBI single that plated Leo.
In a concerted effort on the hill, Pirates reliever Alex (2) struck out one during the third frame.
However, the Bucs utilized four hits and a two walks in the bottom of the third to answer back with four to increase their advantage to 9-4.
After Zenon had led off the inning with a single and stolen two bases to reach third, Daniel (13) drew a walk to put a pair of Pirates on the corners. At this juncture, the Bucs executed a double steal as Daniel drew the throw as he stole second and therefore allowing Zenon to blaze home safely from third.
An ensuing Lizzies wild pitch would allow Daniel to motor home safely from third and put the Pirates up 7-4.
After a two out single, Myles would reach third on a pair of stolen bases. Francis would deliver Myles home on a RBI single.
Next, Aiden would be hit by pitch and Ethan (3) drew a walk to load the bases. Alex M. would follow with a RBI single that allowed Francis to come home to roost.
In a spirited foray on the mound, Lizzies reliever Roland (9) struck out one and induced a pop up out during the third inning.
Pirates reliever Aaron (6) would strike out three in the top of the fourth to keep the potent Lizzies offense off the basepaths and the scoresheet.
With some stellar glove work from his defense, Lizzies reliever Jian (8) would strike out one in the bottom of the fourth to keep the Bucs off the scoreboard.
The Lizzies defense shone brightly in the fourth as right fielder Simon (4) battled the cruel glare of the sun to make two great fly ball catches to rob the Pirates off a pair of hits.
Pirates closer Daniel (13) struck out one in the top of the fifth as he retired the Lizzies in 1-2-3 fashion to seal the deal on a hard fought victory.
