Beneath a ceiling of pristine midsummer skies, the Martingrove White Sox defeated our Toronto Playgrounds Rookie Ball Selects 11-8 in seven innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Select Loop action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 3.

In a crisp and entertaining proceeding between two talented and well coached teams, the White Sox fended off several challenges by a pesky TP squad to prevail for a well deserved victory.

Martingrove threatened in the top of the first by when Santino (7) and Max (12) led off the inning with back to back singles to put two runners on base.

However, with one out, TP shortstop Jordan L. (10) flashed his leather to initiate a stellar 6-3 double play to get them out of the inning unscathed. After snaring a searing line drive off the bat of Timonthy (10) to record the second out, Jordan L. made a rocket throw to first baseman Sam (2) to force out a wayfaring White Sox base runner who had wandered astray from first base to chalk up the third out of the frame.

In three at bats, Michael (12) sparked the TP offense by going 2 for 3 with a run scored and 2 RBI's.

Liam (10) and Emmett (8) led off the bottom of the first with a pair of singles to put two ducks on the pond. However, the Martingrove defense turned back the TP challenge and kept them off the scoresheet.

Both TP and Martingrove used their defensive prowess in the second inning to retire each other in quick 1-2-3 fashion.

In the top of the third, the White Sox utilized a six hit attack to score five and take a 5-0 lead. After Nathan (1) led off the inning with a single, Ryan (8)stroked an one out RBI single to bring him home with the opening run of the game.

With the bases loaded, Max delivered a two out 2 RBI double that allowed Ryan and Julian (4) to come home to roost. With two runners on base, Marco (3) followed with a 2 RBI single that plated Santino and Max.

Despite a single by Stephen (1) in the bottom of the third, Martingrove played some air tight defense to keep TP off the scoring ledger.

The White Sox tallied another run in the top of the fourth to stretch their advantage to 6-0. After Jacob (5) stroked a lead off single, Kai (14) delivered him home with a RBI single. After the run scored, the TP defense stymied Martingrove for the rest of the inning.

Toronto Playgrounds unleashed a five hit barrage in the bottom of the fourth to trim the deficit to two. After Emmett and Jordan W. (1) led off the inning with back to back singles to put two runners aboard, Jordan L. stroked a RBI single that allowed Emmett to come homeward with TP’s first run of the game.

With two TP runners on the pond, Michael (12) followed with a RBI single that plated Jordan W.

Sam (2) launches a grace under pressure 2 RBI double in the fourth inning against the White Sox.

Martingrove answered back with a pair in the top of the fifth to widen their lead to 8-4. With two runners on the basepaths, Marco powered a clutch two out 2 RBI double to plate Julian and Santino.

With two outs, TP left fielder Stephen made a laser throw to third baseman Jordan W. to retire the White Sox baserunner trying to advance to third base and record a nifty 7-5 putout to close out the inning.

Despite respective singles by Liam and Emmett in the bottom of the fifth, Martingrove turned back the TP threat and kept them off the scoreboard.

The TP Wall of Sound defense set down the White Sox in 1-2-3 order in the top of the sixth to keep the deficit at four.

In the bottom of the sixth, TP scored one to trim the margin to 8-5. After a lead off single by Jordan L., Michael delivered him home with a RBI single.

However, the White Sox replied with three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 11-5. With two ducks on the pond, Michael (11) delivered a RBI sacrifice hit that allowed Nathan to come home to roost. Ryan followed with a one out RBI single that plated Tommy (2).

Later, with two runners on the bases, Santino hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Ryan to advance home.

Trailing by six, Toronto Playgrounds refused to wave the white flag of surrender in the bottom of the seventh as they gamely donned their rally caps in a comeback bid.

After Desmond (3) singled and Christian (7) reached base on a fielder’s choice to put two runners on base, Stephen powered a clutch one out 2 RBI triple into left field that allowed both Desmond and Christian to come homeward bound and trim the margin to 11-7.

Liam followed with a RBI single that plated Stephen and slice the shortfall to three.

Shaken, but not stirred, the White Sox defense eventually found its mojo and extinguished the feverish TP rally bid to seal the deal on a hard fought victory.

The TP Rookie Ball Selects (7-6) will play their final regular season EBA Select Loop game next Tuesday, August 18 at Christie Pits Diamond 3 when they play host to the Annette A’s at 6:30 p.m.
