TAKING NO PRISONERS, THE GO GO LIZZIES DISPATCH THE GRITTY METROPOLITANS TO WIN THEIR OPENING ROUND ROBIN PLAYOFF GAME AT CHRISTIE PITS
Under the incandescent lights on a warm summer night, the Lizzies defeated the Mets 13-5 in four innings of Peewee Division round robin playoff action tonight at Christie Pits Diamond 2.
In an entertaining proceeding contested by two talented and well coached teams, the Lizzies used a combination of solid pitching to stymie their opponent and an opportunistic offense to eventually pull away from the gritty Mets for a convincing victory.
The Lizzies would parlay a four hit and five walk attack into four runs in the top of the first to take an early 4-0 lead. After Julian (15) led off the inning with a walk and stolen base, Leo (10) delivered him home with a RBI single.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Ben (5) and Ethan (2) stroked back to back RBI singles that allowed Jonathan (13) and Gabe (1) to come home to roost. Jaleelah (11) would follow with a bases loaded RBI walk to plate Michael (7).
The Mets defense shone in the first when they executed a nice 2-5 putout at third base. As Leo made a dash to steal third, Mets catcher Julia (11) made a cannon throw to third baseman Hayden (2), who applied the tag on the sliding Leo to chalk up the first out of the inning.In the bottom of the first, the Mets answered with a run to trim the deficit to three. After a two out single, Hayden would swipe a pair of bases to advance to third. Quinn (14) would follow with a RBI single to bring Hayden home.
Lizzies southpaw starter Jian (8) would strike out three in the first to quell the Mets insurrection.
The Lizzies would add three to the tally in the top of the second to extend their lead to 7-1. With one out and the bases loaded, Leo garnered a RBI walk to plate Roland (9).
With two outs and the bases loaded, Jonathan (13) would be hit by pitch and that allowed Simon (4) to saunter homeward. A subsequent Mets error would open the door for Julian to blaze home with another run.
Mets reliever Quinn (14) would strike out two in the second to extinguish the Lizzies assault.
The Metropolitans would rally for four in the bottom of the second to slice the margin to 7-5. After drawing a one out walk, Rory would steal two bases to reach third. A subsequent Lizzies error would allow Niall (3) to reach first and allow Rory to motor home.
After a walk to Joseph (9) put two Mets on the basepaths, Niall would successfully steal home.
Next, Mike would draw a two out walk to put two ducks on the pond. Subsequently, Joseph would swipe home and Mike would come homeward on a balk.
In a workmanlike effort, Lizzies reliever Roland (9) would strike out two in the second.
However, the Lizzies would reply with four in the top of the third to widen their lead to 11-5. With one out and the bases loaded, a Mets error would allow Michael to come home to crow. Another subsequent error would open the gateway for Ethan (11) to come homeward.
After a walk to Roland put two mallards on the pond, Alex (14) stroked a RBI single to plate Jaleelah. A subsequent wild pitch would allow Roland to come home to roost.
In a gritty effort on the mound, Mets reliever Hayden (2) would strike out one in the third.
With 1-2-3 efficiency, Lizzies reliever Ben (5) would strike out three in the bottom of the third to keep them off the bases and the scoreboard.
The Lizzies would add two insurance runs in the top of the fourth to increase their advantage to 13-5. With one out and the bases juiced to the gills, a balk call on the Mets would force Leo home from third base. A subsequent Mets error would allow Jian to come homeward.
Mets reliever Julia (11) would strike out one in the fourth to temper the Lizzies attack.
The inning was highlighted by pair of nice defensive plays turned by the Mets. Third baseman Rory and second baseman Niall combined to rundown a wayfaring Lizzies baserunner for a nifty 5-4 putout for the first out. And centre fielder Flynn (7) made a nice catch on a high fly ball to record the third out of the frame.
Lizzies closer Ethan (2) would strike out one in the bottom of the fourth to keep the Mets off the scoring ledger and seal the deal on the victory.
The Lizzies defense turned in a pretty 2-5-2 putout during the inning when third baseman Ben and catcher Michael combined to rundown a perambulating Mets baserunner to chalk up second out of the frame.
