GATHERING NO MOSS, THE GRITTY ROCKIES PREVAIL OVER THE MIGHTY GIANTS FOR THE ROUND ROBIN PLAYOFF VICTORY AT CHRISTIE PITS
Under a ceiling of tranquil late summer skies, the Rockies defeated the Giants 7-4 in 3 ½ innings of Peewee Division round robin playoff action tonight under the lights at Christie Pits Diamond 2.The proceeding was a well played contest between two gifted and well coached teams. In the end, the Rockies prevailed by cashing in on more of the opportunities that were presented to them during the game.
With two outs in the top of the first, the Giants threatened by putting two base runners on base. However, Rockies starter Alden (7) would strike out two to leave them stranded.
In the bottom of the first, the Rockies would take an early 4-0 lead. After Adi (1) led off the frame with a walk, Griff (11) singled to put two ducks on the pond. After both base runners stole a base to position themselves at third and second, a Giants wild pitch would allow Griff to move to third and Adi to come home with the opening run of the game.
After Isaac (13) and Matthew (10) followed with a pair of walks to load the bases, Alden stroked a RBI single to plate Griff.
With bases still loaded, Teddy (12) followed with a sacrifice hit that allowed Isaac to come home to roost. On the same play, Matthew would pounce upon a defensive lapse by the Giants and steal home.
In a gritty effort on the hill, Giants starter Will (13) would retire one in the bottom of the first.
The Giants would answer with one in the top of the second to trim the deficit to three. After back to back two out walks to Emilie (8) and Nigel (14) put two runners on base, Leo (5) delivered a clutch RBI single to bring Emilie home with the Giants first run.
Rockies reliever Isaac (13) would strike out three in the top of the second to quell the Giants insurgency.
The Rockies would tack on another run in the bottom of the second to increase their advantage to 5-1. After leading off the inning with a single, Thomas (9) swiped a pair of bases to reach third. Alexander (14) would deliver a sacrifice hit to plate Thomas.
With a little help from his friends, Giants reliever Nigel (14) would retire three in the bottom of the second to subdue the Rockies.
The inning was also notable for an unusual 1-10-5 putout at third base by the Giants. With one out and a Rockies base runner at second, Leif (3) made a bid to steal third. However, the pitch from Nigel [1] took a Twilight Zone bounce off the backstop pole fencing [10] and the baseball landed in the glove of Giants third baseman Aidan (10) [5], who applied the tag on a sliding Leif for the second out of the frame.
The Giants bats stirred to life in the top of the third as they rallied for three to slice the margin to 5-4. After Jonah (15) singled and Cameron (3) walked to lead off the inning and put two mallards on the pond, Will delivered a RBI single to bring Jonah home to roost.
With one out and two Giants on base, Curtis (2) muscled a sacrifice hit that allowed Cameron to come home from third. Subsequently, a called balk against the Rockies would allow Will to saunter home from third with another run.
Shaken, but not stirred, Rockies reliever Rahim (2) would find the groove and strike out two in the top of the third to extinguish the Giants attack.
However, the Rockies would answer back with two insurance runs in the bottom of the third to widen their lead to 7-4. With no outs and runners at third and second, Tristan (15) would pounce upon a Giants error to blaze home with a run. Later, with two outs and two aboard, Matthew stroked a clutch RBI single to bring Rahim home from third.
Giants pitcher Will would strike out three in the bottom of the third to quell the Rockies insurrection.
Rockies pitcher Alden would strike out three in the top of the fourth to seal the deal on a hard fought win over the pesky Giants.
