IN A THRILLING SEESAW NAIL BITER, THE EXPOS PREVAIL OVER THE LIZZIES TO TAKE THE PRIZE AT CHRISTIE PITS
Beneath a blanket of warm and tranquil skies, the Expos edged the Lizzies 10-9 in six innings of play at Christie Pits Diamond 2 to win the 2015 Toronto Playgrounds Peewee Division Championship.
The highly entertaining tooth and nail proceeding was an electrifying seesaw affair contested between two talented and well coached teams. In the end, the gritty Expos hung on to eke out a razor thin victory over the pesky Lizzies.Despite the final result, there were no losers in this thrilling championship game as the players on both squads gave it their all and left everything on the field of play.
Lizzies starter Ben (5) struck out two in the top of the first to keep the Expos off the scoresheet and in the Big O.
The Lizzies would jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After Roland (9) led off the inning with a walk, Leo (10) was hit by pitch to put two runners on base. With one out, Alex (14) stroked a RBI single to bring Roland home with the opening run of the game.
With two outs, Ben (5) delivered a 2 RBI single to bring Leo and Alex home.
Expos starter Louis (4) would strike out three in the first to quell the Lizzies insurgency.
In the top of the second, the Expos would answer with four to take a 4-3 lead. After Adam (1) doubled and stole third to lead off the inning, Cooper (5) followed with sacrifice hit to deliver Adam home with the Expos first run.
After a one out single, Harris (12) would swipe a pair of bases to reach third. Harris would blaze home after the Lizzies committed an error during Olivia’s (6) at bat, which allowed her to reach base safely.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Ella (8) delivered a grace under pressure RBI single to left field that allowed Cameron (15) to come home with the tying run. Haydn (11) followed with a RBI single that brought Han (2) home with the go ahead run.
However, the Lizzies would reply with a run in the bottom of the second to knot the game at 4-4. After a two out walk, Ethan (2) would steal a pair of bases to advance to third. Julian (15) followed with a clutch RBI single to bring Ethan home with the tying run.
Expos starter Louis would mow down three in the second to subdue the Lizzies rebellion.
Like prized fighters battling in the boxing ring, the Expos would answer back with four in the top of the third to take an 8-4 lead. After doubling with one out, Louis would steal third and come motoring home with the go ahead run on a dropped third strike to Alexia (3).
With Alexia aboard on the dropped third strike, Taras (9) drew a walk to put two Expos on the basepaths. Adam followed with a RBI single that brought Alexia home to roost.Following a walk to Cooper that put two ducks on the pond, Harris delivered a sacrifice hit that allowed Taras to come home. Olivia would follow with a RBI single to plate Adam.
Expos reliever Harris (12) would strike out two in the bottom of the third to keep the Lizzies off the scoring ledger.
Harris would be helped out by a superb 9-6 putout at second base during the inning. After a one out single to right field, Leo made a bid to stretch his hit into a double. However, Expos right fielder Ella quickly retrieved the ball and made a rocket throw to shortstop Cameron, who applied the tag on a sliding Leo to chalk up the second out of the frame.
Lizzies reliever Michael (7) would strike out one in the top of the fourth to keep the Expos off the scoreboard.
Michael would be aided by a pretty 4-3 double play in the fourth. With no outs and Cameron of the Expos at first, Han slashed a ball up the middle. However, Lizzies second baseman Roland vacuumed it up like a Kirby and stepped on first to retire Cameron. Then Roland made a laser throw to first to retire Han by a step and record the first two outs of the inning.
With bravado, the Lizzies would unleash a five hit attack in the bottom of the fourth and rally with four to tie the game 8-8. After back to back singles by Ben and Jaleelah put two baserunners on board, Jonathan (13) delivered a one out 2 RBI single that allowed them to come homeward bound.
The Expos D would shine in the fourth on a nifty 4-3 putout when second baseman Juan (13) vacuumed up a hot shot off the bat of Jian (8). Then Juan made a quick throw to first baseman Avi (10) to erase the speedy Jian and record the first out of the inning.
Gabe (1) followed with a RBI single to tally Jonathan. Later, Ethan would stroke a RBI single that allowed Gabe to come home with the tying run.However, the Expos replied with a run in the top of the fifth to take a 9-8 lead. With one out and two Expos on base, Louis muscled a sacrifice hit to first that allowed Ella to zoom home with the go ahead run.
Lizzies southpaw reliever Jian (8) would strike out two in the fifth to extinguish the Expos insurrection.
With the Lizzies potential tying run standing at third, Expos reliever Adam (1) would strike out two in the bottom of the fifth to keep the Lizzies off the scoring abacus.
The Expos would tally an important insurance run in the top of the sixth to give them a 10-8 lead. Reaching base on a one out single, Adam would advance to third on a balk and a stolen base. After Cooper walked to put two mallards on the pond, Harris delivered a sacrifice hit towards first that allowed Adam to come home to crow.
With two outs, Lizzies reliever Jian would pick off Cooper at second base to chalk up the third out of the inning.
Expos reliever Adam would strike out the first two Lizzies in the bottom of the sixth. However, the pesky Lizzies refused to let their season end and go quietly into the night.
After drawing a two out walk, Jian would swipe a pair of bases to ensconce himself at third. Ben followed with a clutch RBI single that brought Jian home and slice the deficit to one.
With the tying run aboard and the game on the line, Adam would coax the next Lizzies batter to ground out to Expos first baseman Louis and seal the deal on the thrilling championship win.
