The Toronto Playgrounds House League Baseball Committee has issued an update concerning the TP Select Team Tryout process that we will be following. The original information we sent and posted said that the first three Select team tryouts would be “open” to any interested players and then the tryouts would become by “coach invitation” only. However, we are going to extend the “open” tryouts for one more week.

So, the tryouts taking place this Saturday, January 30 and next Saturday, February 6 will be open to all interested players. On Saturday, February 13. there will be no tryouts as that is the Family Day long weekend. Beginning on Saturday, February 20, the tryouts will be by “coach invitation” only…the coaches will be informing the players which ones they’d like to have at the tryout.

Tryouts for the 2016 Toronto Playgrounds Select teams in the Rookie Ball (2007-2008), Mosquito (2005-2006), and Peewee (2003-2004) divisions will continue this Saturday, January 30. The times are listed below by year of birth.

For players and parents who require more information as to how we operate our Select program, please click on the following link for a description of the TP Select Baseball program .

The select teams will play one game a week and have one practice (or some weeks two) in addition to their participation in our house league program. Players who make the select teams but who then do not take part in house league will forfeit their spots. In order to take part in our select tryouts, players have to be registered in our house league program…that means a completed registration form has to be handed in and the fee has to be paid. If you are planning to attend a Select tryout this Saturday and you haven’t already handed or sent in a registration form, please return the registration form with payment to the Bob Abate Community Centre (485 Montrose Avenue) by this Friday, January 29 at 5:00 p.m. If that is absolutely not possible, then bring it to the Harbord gym on Saturday.

This year we are going to require the house league fee to be paid prior to attending a tryout. If you haven’t already paid and you are not able to pay the entire fee by Saturday you will still be required to pay a $25.00 fee before participating in the tryouts. This fee will be applied to your houseleague registration, so if you pay $25.00 on Saturday you will owe the registration fee minus $25.00. If you paid this $25.00 fee last Saturday, you don’t have to pay it again.

Please note that our regular refund policy, which is described on the registration form, does not include this $25.00 fee. In other words, if you register for house league, attend select tryouts, and then withdraw from house league before May 1, you will be refunded your fee minus $25.00.

The TP Select Team tryout times for each age group on Saturday, January 30 are as follows:

  • 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon > players born in 2003
  • 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. > players born in 2004
  • 1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. > players born in 2007
  • 2:15 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. > players born in 2008
  • 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. > players born in 2005 and 2006*

*Please note this change – all Mosquito aged players will be trying out together from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

UPDATED: There will be four weeks of Saturday tryouts open to anyone who is interested (January 16, 23, 30 and February 6), so it is obviously important that players interested in select make it out to at least one of those four tryouts. After February 6, the coaches will be letting people know which players will be invited to continue through the tryout process and which players won’t, and at that point the Rookie Ball and Mosquito players remaining for the tryouts will be attending for ninety minutes rather than forty-five.

The tryouts will take place in the gym at Harbord Collegiate Institute (286 Harbord Street), which is located on the north side of Harbord Street between Euclid Ave. and Manning Ave.To enter the school, people must use Door # 5, which is located at the northeast corner of the school off Euclid Ave. Once you go in that door follow the signs to the gym. Parking is available in the underground school lot as well as on the street. Do not park on school property other than the underground lot. The entrance to the lot is off Euclid Ave. just north of door # 5.
