AFTER THE WOLVERINES STAGE A FEROCIOUS SEVEN RUN RALLY TO TIE THE GAME IN THE FOURTH INNING, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS SNAPS THE 11-11 DEADLOCK IN THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE FRAME TO WIN THEIR THIRD EBA SELECT GAME OF THE SEASON IN A THRILLER AT CHRISTIE PITS
Beneath a ceiling of warm and humid skies for miles around, our Toronto Playgrounds Major Peewee Selects edged the Weston Wolverines 12-11 in four thrilling innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Select play this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2 to win their third game of the season and remain undefeated.
Down 11-4, the pesky Wolverines staged a miraculous seven run rally in the top of the fourth to tie the proceedings. Keying the tenacious comeback was a sizzling three run home run shot by Alex (27).
Shaken, but not stirred, Toronto Playgrounds regrouped in the bottom half of the fourth to take the prize. With one out, Aaron (54) delivered a RBI single to right field to bring Jonathan (19) home with the game winning run.
In three up and three down fashion, TP starter Nigel (20) mowed down three Wolverines with 3 K’s in the top of the first.
The TP offense charged out the gates in the bottom half of the first to take an early 5-0 lead. After a sparkling lead off triple down the first baseline by Jonathan, Aaron stroked a RBI single to bring Jonathan home with the first run of the proceedings.
After Piper’s (13) one out walk put base runners at third and first, Aaron would bolt home on a wild pitch by Weston.
Subsequently, after back to back walks to Harris (12) and Nigel loaded the bases, Zenon (9) drew a RBI walk that brought Piper home with the third run.
With the bases still juiced to the gills, Leandro (10) delivered a 2 RBI double that allowed Harris and Nigel to come homeward bound.
However, Weston roared back with a pair in the top of the second to trim the deficit to three. With two out and two Wolverines on base, Endy (11) delivered a clutch 2 RBI double that allowed J.D. (1) and Caleb (22) to come homeward bound.
With grit and determination, TP starter Nigel would eventually pitch himself out of a mojo jojo jam by striking out three in the second to quell the Weston uprising and leave the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the second, the TP offense answered back with five runs to widen their advantage to 10-2. After Ben (4) led off the inning with a walk and two stolen bases to reach third, Jonathan delivered an one out RBI single to plate Ben.Next, Jordan (14) was hit by pitch and that put two ducks on the pond. With TP baserunners at third and second , a Wolverines pickoff attempt went amiss and allowed Jonathan to score and Jordan to move up to third.
After Piper was hit by pitch, Harris drew a two out walk to load the bases. Nigel was hit by pitch and that allowed Jordan to saunter home and put TP up 8-5.
Subsequently, with the bases still juiced, Piper would motor home on a wild pitch and Harris would score on a Weston error.
The Wolverines would reply with a pair in the top of the third to trim the shortfall to six. With no outs and two aboard, Caleb would stroke a majestic 2 RBI double to deep left field to bring Anthony (28) and J.D. home to roost.
On the play, the speedy Caleb attempted to stretch his double into a triple. However, the TP defense rose to the challenge and executed a picture perfect 8-6-5 putout. After retrieving the ball, centre fielder Jonathan made a strong relay throw shortstop Leandro. Then Leandro turned and made a silver bullet throw to third baseman Raymond (16), who adroitly applied the tag on a sliding Caleb to chalk up the first out of the inning.
Shaken, but not stirred, TP reliever Harris (12) would strike out two in the third to extinguish the Wolverines rebellion.
In the bottom of the third, TP would tack on another run to widen their lead to 11-4. After a single by Leandro, Raymond stroked a clutch two out RBI double that allowed Leandro to come home to crow.
Weston reliever Edwin (7) would strike out two in the third to silence the TP insurgency.
Refusing to surrender to their fate, the gritty Wolverines offense ignited like a neutron bomb in the top of the fourth as they exploded for seven to deadlock the game. With the bases loaded, Anthony delivered a 2 RBI single that brought Raf (6) and Edwin home and trim the deficit to five.
J.D. followed with a RBI single that allowed Jordan (13) to come home to roost and slice the margin to 11-7
With two mallards on the lake, Alex powered a magical one out three run home run shot to the deep dish pizza stratosphere of centre field that pulled Weston within one.
After Asafa (10) drew a walk and stole second, Endy stroked a RBI double to bring Asafa homeward with the game tying run.
Reeling and bleeding on the ropes after surrendering a seven run lead, the TP defense dug deep into their reserves and regained their composure at this juncture as they rose to the occasion to fend off the adversity surrounding them. As a collective, they doggedly beat back the Wolverines challenge and preserve the 11-11 tie.
After his game tying double, Endy made a bold bid to steal third and bring Weston’s go ahead run seventy-five feet closer to home. However, TP catcher Piper made a laser throw to third baseman Raymond, who tagged out a sliding Endy to record the second out of the frame.
On the next play, as TP reliever Ben (4) induced Raf into a slow as molasses ground ball, it forced shortstop Nigel to field the difficult chopper in Gold Glove fashion and make a lightning throw to first baseman Aaron to complete the nifty 6-3 play to chalk up the third out and bring the curtain down on the top half of an unbelievable half inning.
After Jonathan led off the bottom of the fourth with a double, he would advance to third on a deep fly ball to right by Jordan. It was at this moment where Aaron stroked a one out RBI hit to break the tie and bring Jonathan home with TP’s game winning run over Weston.
And when it was all said and done, that was one helluva of a game!
