Beneath a layer of pristine autumn skies today at Christie Pits, the Toronto Playgrounds House League Baseball Committee staged its fourth annual ‘Derby For Distance’ fundraising event.

Over the course of six hours, a large contingent of eager participants (varying in age from seven to seventy) stepped into the batter’s box on the three diamonds at Christie Pits to take their best swings at baseballs being fired out of a pitching machine at speeds ranging from 25 to 80 miles per hour.

It was the consensus at the end of the day that a splendid time was had by all in attendance at the Derby.

As an added bonus at this year’s Derby, esteemed local author Joyce Grant was at Christie Pits on Sunday to officially launch her debut youth baseball novel Tagged Out. The Committee wishes to thank Joyce for generously donating several copies of her book to our prize raffle draw.

And when it was all over, our primary goal was achieved: to have fun while raising funds to build overhead lighting standards on Christie Pits Diamond 3, benefitting the children who play in our TP House League and Select Baseball operations in future seasons. In fact, a grand total of $3500 was raised. Thanks to everyone for stepping up to the plate at our Derby event in support of TP House League Baseball.

The TP House League Baseball Committee sincerely thanks all the people who stepped up and volunteered their valuable time and energy to help us to stage the Derby. Whether it was fielding balls, feeding the pitching machine, keeping tabulation of the points, helping out at the registration and raffle table, setting up tables and equipment, selling drinks and snacks, etc., your contributions made the Derby For Distance fundraiser a fun filled and successful event for everyone involved.

And finally, the Committee wishes to thank Bill Evans and Steve Smith for organizing and spearheading the fourth Derby For Distance fundraising event. Without their tireless energy and logistical acumen, today’s Derby wouldn’t have been the rip roarin’ success that it was.
