THE BRONX BOMBERS RALLY TO OVERTAKE THE ASTROS AT BICKFORD PARK

Thomas (10) delivers a single for the Yankees in the top of the first inning. In four at bats, Thomas went 1 for 1 [single, three walks] to spark the Yankees attack against the Astros by scoring two runs, delivering a RBI, and stealing five bases. Thomas also pitched two stellar innings where he allowed only one run while striking out five Astros.

Beneath a blanket of warm and humid midsummer skies, the Yankees defeated the Astros 9-6 in four innings of Mosquito Division action this evening at the Bickford Park South Diamond.

Astros starter Julius (11) would strike out three in the top of the first to keep the Yankees off the scoring ledger.

Peter (7) takes advantage of an Astros error to blaze home from third base with a run in the second inning.

In the bottom of the first, the Astros threatened by putting two runners on bases courtesy of a pair of walks. However, Yankees starter Thomas (10) would strike out three to keep the Astros anchored to the launch pad.

The Yankees would stake themselves to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second. After a pair of walks by Luka (14) and Willem (12) to lead off the frame, Duncan (11) drew a walk to load the bases. Peter (7) followed by hitting into a fielder’s choice that allowed Duncan to advance to second, erased Willem at third, and brought Luka home with the opening run of the game.

Following a one out walk by Thomas that reloaded the bases, Steven (8) stroked a RBI single to plate Duncan. With the bases still juiced to the gills, an Astros error would allow Peter to bolt home from third with another run.

With two runners on base, Willy delivered a RBI single to bring Thomas home to crow.

In a spirited foray on the hill, Astros reliever Alex (15) chalked up a groundout in the second.

Astros starter Julius (11) pitched two scoreless innings where he struck out five Yankees.

However, the Astros would answer back with four in the bottom of the second to deadlock the proceedings 4-4. Following a pair of walks by Antonio (12) and Julius to open the inning, Graeme (3) would earn a one out walk to load the bases. Alex and Antonio followed with back to back RBI walks that allowed Antonio and Julius to come home to roost.

With the bases still juiced to overflowing, Julius stroked a RBI single to plate Graeme. A subsequent faux pas on the play by the Yankees defence would allow Alex to motor homeward with another run.

In a spirited effort on the mound, Yankees reliever Duncan (11) would ring up a pop out in the second frame.

With 1-2-3 efficiency, Astros hurler Julius would tally a groundout and a pair of strikeouts in the top of the third to keep the Yankees moored in the Bronx.

The Astros would score a run in the top of the third to take a 5-4 lead. After a leadoff walk, Thomas (1) advanced to third on a stolen base and wild pitch. Alex followed with a one out RBI single to bring Thomas home with the go ahead run.

Yankees pitcher Thomas would strikeout two in the third to quell the Astros uprising.

Yankees call up Willy (6) delivers a RBI single in the second frame. In two at bats, Willy went 1 for 1 [single, walk] with a run scored and a RBI versus the Astros.

With two outs and a runner on base, Thomas would be the recipient of a nice play from his defence. As Julius slashed a screamer between second and third, Yankees shortstop Willem leapt into the air to make a pretty catch to rob the Astros of a sure hit and ring up the third out of the inning.

In the top of the fourth, the Yankees would rally with five to take a 9-5 lead. Following a pair of walks by Peter and Thomas to leadoff the inning, Steven garnered a walk to load the bases. An ensuing wild pitch by the Astros would allow Thomas and Steven to move up a base and Peter to blaze home with the tying run.

After a walk by Willy reloaded the bases, Thomas would steal home with the go ahead run.

With two runners on base, Luka delivered a RBI single to bring Steven home to do the jitterbug.

Subsequently, with runners at third and second, Willem stroked a RBI single to plate Willy.

With one out and the bases juiced to the max, Thomas drew a RBI walk that allowed Willem to shuffle home from third.

Astros reliever Thomas (1) would hook up with catcher Antonio on a nifty 1-2 fielder’s choice to erase Luka for the first out in the fourth.

Refusing to surrender, the Astros tallied a run in the bottom of the fourth to trim the deficit to three. After a leadoff walk, Thomas would steal a pair of bases to advance to third. With one out, Alex would ground out to first to bring home Thomas.

Yankees closer Luka (14) would coax the Astros to hit into three groundouts to seal the deal on the victory.
