THE WOLVERINES PREVAIL OVER TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS AT CHRISTIE PITS

With the bases loaded, Fernando (90) delivers a RBI single during Weston’s four run surge in the fourth inning. (In the end, Fernando’s hit brought home the Wolverines eventual winning run over TP.) In two at bats, Fernando went 2 for 2 [double, single] at the dish to spark the Weston attack with a run scored and a RBI.

Beneath a ceiling of cloudy and overcast skies, the Weston Wolverines defeated the Toronto Playgrounds Minor Mosquito Selects 8-5 in four innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Mosquito Select Loop action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2.

The proceeding was an entertaining and well played contest between two talented teams. In the end, the Wolverines made the most of their opportunities to prevail for the victory.

In the top of the first, Adrian (14) and Nixon (88) drew back to back walks that put two Weston runners on base. With ice in his veins, TP starter Momo (18) vanquished the threat by striking out two Wolverines.

Momo also received a little help from his friends during the inning. With one out, Francisco (84) seared a scorching line drive towards first. However, TP first baseman Cody (11) calmly snagged the hot tamale offering in the webbing of his mitt to ring up the second out.

Weston starter Adrian (14) stymied the TP batting order over the course of three innings. Adrian allowed four runs (two earned0 while striking out six.

With 1-2-3 efficiency, Weston starter Adrian (14) retired the top of the TP batting order with a groundout and two strikeouts to keep the game scoreless.

Kudos to Wolverines first baseman Ethan (82), who made a nice back handed catch on a sharply hit groundball off the bat of Cooper (3) for the second out.

The Wolverines drew first blood in the top half of the second when they staked themselves to a 1-0 lead. After a leadoff walk, Josh (3) would advance to third on a stolen base and a TP error. With one out, Jaden (85) delivered a sacrifice hit that allowed Josh to motor home with the opening run of the game.

Entering the fray with two outs, TP reliever Cooper (3) tallied a strikeout to end the Weston insurgency.

Patiently dining upon a Wolverine buffet serving of five walks in the bottom of the second, TP staged a rally to take a 3-1 lead. After a leadoff walk, Dylan (10) advanced to third on a stolen base and a Weston faux pas. A subsequent passed ball would allow Dylan to zoom homeward with TP’s first run of the game.

With one out, Momo would reach base on a dropped third strike and William (33) followed with a walk that put two mallards on the lake. After a double steal, Momo came home with a run on a passed ball.

After Joel (12) and Jiri (15) drew walks to load the bases, Adam (20) worked the count in his favour to earn a two out bases loaded RBI walk that brought William home to do the funky chicken.

Shaken, but not stirred, Weston starter Adrian would ring up his third strikeout in the second frame to extinguish the TP threat and leave the bases loaded.

The Wolverines quickly replied with three in the top portion of the third to retake the lead 4-3. Following a leadoff double and stolen base by Fernando (90), Matthew (81) stroked a one out RBI single that brought Fernando home and trim the deficit to one.

After chasing down his prey, TP reliever Cooper (3) tags out Weston’s Matthew (81) to complete a scintillating 6-2-5-1 rundown play in the third inning.

With Matthew on second after a stolen base, Francisco stroked a slow chopper between third and second. It was at this juncture that the TP defence rose to the occasion and executed a sweet rundown play. After vacuuming up the ball, TP shortstop Momo noticed that Matthew had made the turn at third and was making a brazen dash for home. With lightning reflexes, Momo threw the ball to catcher Cooper, who ran Matthew back up the line towards third. As Matthew approached third base, Cooper made a quick throw to third baseman Jiri, who began to chase Matthew back towards home. As Matthew reversed direction once again to evade capture, Jiri threw to TP reliever Cooper, who chased down his prey and slapped the tag on Matthew for the scintillating 6-2-5-1 putout.

With two outs and a runner on third, Adrian drew a walk that put two ducks on the pond. Following Adrian’s theft of second, TP uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Adrian to advance to third and brought Francisco home with the tying run. A subsequent dropped third strike would allow Nixon to reach first safely and bring Adrian home with the go ahead run.

Finding his mojo, Weston starter Adrian retired TP in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the third with a strikeout and two groundouts to keep them off the scoring ledger.

The Wolverines would add four insurance runs in the top of the fourth to widen their advantage to 8-3. After a leadoff single and a pair of stolen bases by Josh that moved him to third, Srigan (86) stroked a RBI single to bring Josh home.

Players from Weston and TP congratulate each other on a great game.

Following back to back walks by Jaden and Gavin (80) that loaded the bases, Fernando delivered a RBI single to bring home Srigan.

Subsequently, with two outs and the bases still juiced to the gills, Francisco drew a bases loaded RBI walk to bring home Jaden. Adrian followed and was hit by pitch to force home Gavin.

In a gritty effort, TP reliever Charlie (8) would strike out two in the fourth to extinguish the Wolverines insurrection.

With one out, Charlie received a nice defensive play from TP left fielder Cody. Battling the glare from the overhead lights, Cody made a nice catch on an eight mile high fly ball off the bat of Matthew.

Refusing to wave the white flag, TP donned their rally caps in the bottom of the fourth and clawed back with a pair to trim the shortfall to three. Following walks by Dylan and Aron that put two otters on the lake, Momo hit into a fielder’s choice that erased Aron at second. On the play, the Weston defence would commit a faux pas that allowed Momo to shuffle to second and brought Dylan home to crow.

After a one out walk by William that put two aboard, Cody hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Momo to come home to do the hustle.

With two outs and two runners on base, Weston closer Ethan (82) would chalk up a strikeout to seal the deal on the Wolverines victory.

For their next EBA Mosquito Select Loop game, the TP Minor Mosquito Selects (1-4) hit the road next Sunday (June 10) when they venture to Queensway Park to battle the Royal York Boys at 5:30 p.m.
