Beneath a genteel ceiling of warm Spring skies, the Toronto Playgrounds Major Peewee Selects defeated the Royal York White 9-5 in seven innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Select Loop action this afternoon at Westway Park.
In the season opener for both teams, a nitty gritty TP squad utilized an elixir of strong pitching and making the most of their offensive opportunities to prevail over the pesky Cardinals and earn their first victory of 2019.
Here are some highlights of the proceedings:
- TP Major Peewee pitchers, Shael, Jakub, and Dash combined to mow down the Royal York batting order with a whopping fourteen strikeouts (six looking), and allowed only one base-on-balls among them.
- The pitching breakdown was four strikeouts for Shael; five for Jakub, and five for Dash.
- The tone of the game was set in the first inning when TP starter Shael made a fantastic pickoff play at third base in the first inning to serve notice to the Cardinals that TP meant business.
- Julia and Zach’s catching outings behind the dish were top notch.
- TP players exhibited some excellent baserunning discipline and skills versus the White. Despite Royal York’s numerous pickoff attempts (about 12-14 times during the proceeding) to reign in and rattle the TP offence, the Major Peewee Selects were never caught napping on the bases. In a nutshell, TP was taking wise leads and getting back when necessary.
- When the dust had finally settled on the basepaths, TP had tallied a scintillating total of fourteen stolen bases against the Cardinals.
- Zach and Nathan each got key doubles to spark the TP attack. But mostly, TP used a disciplined offensive approach by just working to put the ball in play to generate its nine run tally.
The TP Major Peewee Selects (1-0) continue their EBA Select Loop road trip by returning to Westway Park on Wednesday (May 8) evening to battle the Royal York Red at 6:00 p.m.
