Beneath a genteel blanket of sunny and cloudy skies, the Toronto Playgrounds Major Peewee Selects defeated the Royal York Red 9-6 in three innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Select Loop action this evening at Westway Park.

The game was a tight and entertaining contest between two talented and well coached teams. In the end, a gritty TP squad fended off the pesky Cardinals to take home the prize.

Here is a brief recap of the proceedings:

  • Feasting upon a Mandarin Buffet serving of four walks and four key hits, TP staked themselves to an early 6-0 lead in the top half of the first.
  • Just like in their 9-5 season opening victory last week against the Royal York White, TP utilized its baserunning prowess to put pressure on the Red Cardinals defence by stealing eight bases in the first frame. In a Grand Theft parade, Julia (18), Jakub (11), Dash (27) and William (21) stole two bases each during the inning.
  • Not to be outdone, Royal York chowed down on a generous serving of TP defensive faux pas in the bottom of the first as they answered back with five runs to close the gap to 6-5. Meg, Dylan, Eamonn, Declan and Aidan would come home to roost for the Cardinals.
  • Nonplussed, TP replied with three in the top portion of the second to increase its lead to 9-5. Julia, Lucas (19) and Zachary (24) would come home to crow.
  • The Cardinals rallied back with a run in the bottom half of the second to trim the deficit to 9-6 when Meg came homeward.
  • In the top of the third, TP managed to put a pair of runners on base. However, the Royal York defence diffused the threat and kept TP off the scoring ledger.
  • With the game on the line, TP closer Dash (27) retired the Cardinals in 1-2-3 fashion with two strikeouts in the bottom of the third to seal the deal on a hard fought victory.

The TP Major Peewee Selects (2-0) continue their road trip on the EBA Select circuit next Wednesday (May 15) when they venture to Pelmo Park to take on the Weston Wolverines at 7:00 p.m. Special travel packages to this stellar event are still available from our ticket office located in the TP Baseball Clubhouse.
