FIRING ON ALL PISTONS, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS LAUNDER THE WHITE SOX AT CHRISTIE PITS TO EARN THEIR SECOND EBA MOSQUITO SELECT LOOP VICTORY OF THE SEASON
Beneath an exquisite blanket of warm and mellow skies, the Toronto Playgrounds Minor Mosquito Selects defeated the Martingrove White Sox 20-3 in four innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Mosquito Select Loop action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2.
Rebounding from a 15-2 loss to the Royal York (White) Cardinals last week, TP was firing on all pistons as they starched the White Sox with a true grit and resolve.
Matingrove threatened in the top half of the first when they put two runners on base courtesy of a dropped third strike to leadoff batter Jake (7) and a walk by Noah (11).
Nonplussed, TP starter Sawyer (43) found the groove and struck out three in the first inning to leave the White Sox runners hang drying on the clothesline.
Sending a Mardi Gras conga line procession of fourteen batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, the TP offence exploded with tsunami force as they staked themselves to a 9-0 lead.
After a leadoff walk by Charles (11) and a dropped third strike to Hudson (18) that put two ducks on the pond, Ben (15) stroked a two RBI single to bring them home with the opening runs of the game.
Following a one out single by Holden (25) and a walk by Henry B. (14) that put two runners on base, Chase (23) delivered a Lou Malnati’s deep dish pizza shot to the outfield for a sweet three run inside the park home run.
After Lucas (24) walked and Mike (9) singled to put two otters on the lake, Payton (3) delivered a two RBI single to bring them home with the Oreo Double Stuff Cookies.
Subsequently, with a runner on third base, Julian (77) stroked a RBI single that allowed Payton to motor home with the peameal bacon.
Following a single by Alex (65) that put two aboard, Sawyer delivered a RBI single to plate Julian.
Entering the fray amidst a five alarm blaze, Martingrove reliever Farley (20) strruck out two batters to extinguish the TP disco inferno.
With guile and precision, TP reliever Charles (11) struck out three in the top of the second to keep the White Sox in the laundry hamper.
Not to be outdone, Martingrove reliever Chase (9) tallied a pop out and strikeout in the bottom of the second to keep TP off the scoring ledger. The White Sox also turned in a pretty defensive gem during the inning when they thwarted a TP baserunner’s dreams of stealing third base.
In the top of the third, Martingrove clawed back with a run to trim the deficit to eight. Following a pair of back to back singles by Justin (22) and Kane (88) that put two mallards on the pond, Ronnie stroked a one out RBI single that brought Justin home with the White Sox first run.
Shaken, but not stirred, TP reliever Holden (25) chalked up a lineout and a pair of groundouts in the third to subdue the Martingrove insurgency.
During the inning, Holden received a sweet defensive play from first baseman Sawyer. With no outs and runners at second and first, White Sox batter Silas (10) seared a hot tamale line drive between first and second. However, Sawyer leapt in the air to make a super backhanded catch on the smokin’ liner to rob Silas of a sure hit and chalk up the first out.
TP would feast upon a series of White Sox defensive miscues in the bottom of the third to extend their advantage to 12-0. After Lucas garnered a two out walk and stole a base, Mike would reach base on a dropped third strike. On the play, Martingrove committed an error that allowed Mike to advance to second and bring Lucas home with a run.
As Mike completed a grand theft of third, the White Sox committed a faux pas that opened the portal for him to zoom home with a dozen Krispy Kreme Glazed Doughnuts.
After Payton reached base on a hit by pitch and Henry K. (13) drew a walk that put two capybaras on the beach. Payton would motor home with a run after Julian reached base on a dropped third strike.
Martingrove reliever Augustino (26) would tally a pair of groundouts and pop out in the third frame to subdue the TP mutiny.
Refusing to surrender, the White Sox scored a pair in the top of the fourth to close the gap to 12-3. Following a leadoff double by Farley, Adler delivered a RBI double to bring him home,
With one out, Adler bolted home from third with a run after Owen (19) was erased at first base on a dropped third strike.
Finding his mojo, TP reliever Julian (77) struck out three in the fourth to curtail the Martingrove insurrection.
In the bottom portion of the fourth, TP added eight insurance runs to their tally to extend their lead to 20-3. After hitting a leadoff single, Oliver (35) swiped a pair to advance to third. As Charles reached base on a dropped third strike, Oliver charged down the third baseline to score a run.
After Hudson garnered a walk that put two aboard, the White Sox committed an error that allowed Charles to come home to roost. Subsequently, with Hudson on third after a steal, a wild pitch would allow him to zoom home with a run.
After Ben reached base on a third strike, both Holden and Henry B. would be hit by pitch to load the bases. Chase stepped into the batter’s box and delivered a two RBI single to bring Ben and Holden home to do the shimmy, shimmy, shake.
In the next sequence, Lucas would be plunked by a pitch to reload the bases. As Mike was erased at first base on a dropped third strike, Henry B. zoomed home from third with a run. A subsequent wild pitch would allow Lucas to shuffle to third and bring Chase home to crow.
With one out and a runner at third, Payton hit into a groundout that allowed Lucas to chug homeward with TP’s final run.
After a bye week away from the EBA Select Loop, the TP Minor Mosquito Selects (2-3) will resume play at the BMBI Mosquito Select Tournament (June 7-9).
