THE ATHLETICS PREVAIL OVER TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS AT CHRISTIE PITS

In a stellar performance under extreme weather conditions, Annette starter Yankou (4) pitched a complete game victory over Toronto Playgrounds at Christie Pits Diamond 2. Over the course of four innings, Yankou surrendered only one run, three hits, while striking out six TP batters to lead the A’s to the winner’s circle.

Under a bright veneer covering of extremely warm summer skies, the Annette A’s defeated the Toronto Playgrounds Minor Peewee Selects 18-1 in four innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Peewee Select Loop action this afternoon at Christie Pits Diamond 2.

Annette sent a procession of thirteen batters to the plate in the top portion of the first frame as they staked themselves to an early 10-0 lead. After a series of consecutive one out walks by Patterson (3), Kriticos (8) and Bevan (34) that loaded the bases, Ramirez (1) garnered a RBI walk that brought Patterson home from third base with the opening run of the game.

With the bases still juiced to the gills, Costa (18) delivered a two RBI double that advanced Ramirez to third and allowed Kriticos and Bevan to come home to roost.

The diehard TP supporters in the bleacher seats seek a measure of comfort under the tent from the unyielding heat and the Annette offensive fireworks.

Following a walk by Yankou (4) that reloaded the bases, Drake (11) drew a bases loaded RBI walk that forced Ramirez to come homeward from third base. With the bases still loaded, Turnbull (9) stroked a RBI single that brought Costa home. A TP error on the play allowed Drake and Turnbull to move up respectively to third and second and opened the portal for Yankou to come home with another run.

After Buckland (14) drew a walk to reload the bases again, Patterson garnered a RBI walk to bring Drake home. With the bases still juiced, Kriticos delivered a bases clearing three RBI single that brought Turnbull, Buckland and Patterson home to do the shimmy, shimmy, shake.

Kriticos (8) delivers a three RBI single during Annette’s ten run tsunami in the first inning. In four at bats, Kriticos went 2 for 3 [hit by pitch; single, double] at the plate to power the A’s attack with four RBI’s versus TP.

On the play, as Kriticos retreated back to first base after a brazen bid to stretch his single into a double, TP centrefielder Raywat (11) made a rocket throw to first baseman Guillermo (14), who tagged out Kriticos on a nifty 8-3 putout play and ring up the second out.

With the TP empire aflame, TP reliever Liam B. (17) entered the fray from the bullpen in the first and tallied a groundout and fly out to extinguish the A’s insurrection.

TP threatened in the bottom of the first when Liam G. (1) singled and Liam B. garnered a walk that put two ducklings on the pond. However, Annette starter Yankou chalked up a pair of groundouts and a strikeout to keep TP off the scoring ledger.

The A’s added another run to their booty in the top of the second to increase their advantage to 11-0. Following a pair of walks by Ramirez and Drake that put two aboard, Turnbull stroked a clutch two out RBI single that brought Ramirez home.

Turnbull (9) delivers a RBI single for the A’s in the second inning. In three at bats, Turnbull went 3 for 3 [two singles, double] at the dish to spark the Annette offence with two runs scored and three RBI’s.

Nonplussed, TP reliever Liam B. rang up a pair of strikeouts and groundout in the second inning to diffuse the Annette mutiny.

A’s starter Yankou recorded two strikeouts in the bottom of the second frame to keep TP off the scoresheet.

Yankou also received a big play from his defence during the inning when Annette catcher Patterson made a lightning throw to third baseman Costa (18) to erase a TP baserunner who made a brazen attempt to steal third base.

After taking the throw from catcher Patterson (3), Annette third baseman Costa (18) tags out a TP baserunner to bring the curtain down on the second inning.

With the wind in their sails, the Athletics tallied another run in the top of the third to extend their lead to 12-0. After leadoff walk, Patterson swiped his way around the horn to third. With one out, Bevan hit into a 1-3 groundout to bring Patterson home.

Unfazed, TP reliever Liam B. induced a groundout and struck out two in the third to subdue the Annette insurgency.

In a solid effort, TP reliever Liam B. (17) tossed 2 2/3 innings of strong relief against Annette to keep TP within striking distance. Liam B. allowed only a pair of runs while striking out four A’s batters.

In the bottom half of the third, TP battled back with a run to break the goose egg. Following a one out walk and stolen base by Raywat, Liam G. stroked a RBI single to bring him home.

Liam G. (1) delivers a RBI single for TP in the third inning. In two at bats, Liam G. went 2 for 2 [two singles] to power the TP ofence.

Shaken, but not stirred, Athletics starter Yankou rang up two strikeouts and a groundout in the third inning to terminate the TP rally.

Annette tacked on six insurance runs in the top tier of the fourth to secure their lead at 18-1. After a leadoff double by Yankou and a single by Drake put two capybaras on the lake, Turnbull delivered a RBI double that brought Yankou homeward.

Patterson (3) rattled the TP defence with his speed on the basepaths. In four at bats, Patterson went 1 for 1 [three walks, double] at the plate with four runs scored and four stolen bases. Patterson also delivered a three RBI double during Annette’s six run uprising in the fourth inning.

Following a walk by Buckland that loaded the bases, Patterson crunched a bases clearing three RBI double that allowed Drake, Turnbull and Buckland to come home and do the Hully Gully. Kriticos followed with a RBI single to bring Patterson home.

Subsequently, with two outs and two aboard, Yankou stroked a RBI single to bring Kriticos home to crow.

TP reliever Niko (2) tallied a pair of fly outs and a groundout in the fourth inning to bring the curtain down on the A’s uprising. Kudos to TP centrefielder Saeed (9) for making two nice catches on a pair of eight mile high fly balls for two outs during the frame.

In a steady workmanlike effort, TP reliever Niko (2) retired the A’s in the fourth frame with two fly outs and a groundout.

A’s starter Yankou chalked up a strikeout and two pop outs in the bottom of the fourth to seal the deal on a complete game victory.

The TP Minor Peewee Selects (1-9) continue their EBA Select homestand at Christie Pits Diamond 2 on Wednesday (July 17) evening when they battle the Royal York White at 7:30 p.m.
