TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS JOURNEY AT THE TOURNEY COMES TO AN END AS THEY GO DOWN SWINGING AGAINST THE BOMBERS AT SMYTHE PARK

The 2019 Toronto Playgrounds Varsity Select Team.

Beneath a shimmering blanket of warm and tender summer skies at Smythe Park, the Bloordale Bombers prevailed 11-6 over the Toronto Playgrounds Varsity Selects in a six inning semi-final elimination game this afternoon at the 2019 Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Varsity Select Championship Tournament.

Bloordale jumped out to early 4-0 advantage in the top half of the first frame. However, TP patiently chipped away at the shortfall as they responded with one in the bottom of the first and another pair in the bottom portion of the second to trim the deficit to one.

After the Bombers tallied a run in the top of the third to widen its lead to 5-3, Toronto Playgrounds battled back with a run in the bottom of the third and another two in the fourth inning to take a slender 6-5 lead.

Not to be outdone, Bloordale answered back in posthaste fashion with a pair in the top of the fifth to retake the upper hand 7-6. The Bombers tallied four insurance runs in the top half of the sixth to salt the semi-final game away.

Toronto Playgrounds began the tournament on Friday night at Dominico Field with a dominating 13-4 six inning victory over Bloordale. TP starter Cormac (54) pitched a complete game to stymie the potent Bombers batting order. Meanwhile, the TP offence utilized twelve steals and ten hits to bury Bloordale and win its first round robin game.

With the winds in its sails, TP prevailed 8-4 over Royal York on Saturday evening at Sentinel Park. In a stellar five inning effort, TP starter Andrew (6) limited the Red Birds to only four runs while striking out seven Cardinals. The TP offence scored six big runs in the top half of the first inning and never had to look back in the rear view mirror. When the dust had finally settled on the base paths, TP had cranked out seven key hits versus Royal York to tally its second round robin victory.

In their final round robin proceeding last night, the Martingrove White Sox rallied with eleven runs in the final frame to usurp TP 14-4 in a five inning affair at Sentinel Park. Down 3-0, a nitty gritty TP team rallied back with four runs in the fourth to take a slender tenderloin 4-3 lead. In an exceptional foray on the hill, TP starter Nolan (24) held the high octane Martingrove offence to only three runs in the first four frames.

Despite falling a wee bit short of reaching the championship round at the EBA playoffs, the TP Varsity Selects nevertheless had a fun filled and rewarding season of baseball during the 2019 EBA Select campaign.

In addition, the entire TP Varsity Select Team and Family had a great time participating at the Brantford Tournament.

The TP Baseball Committee wishes to thank TP Varsity Select Head Coach Karl Schumann and Assistant Coaches Paul Bagnell, Manuel Fernandes and Jundino Ugo for their fortitude and patience in steering these talented Varsity Selects into the EBA Varsity Select Championship Tournament Semi-Final Game, and through the highs and lows of the 2019 season.

The Committee also wishes to commend all the Varsity Select players, coaches, parents and family members for representing the core values of Toronto Playgrounds Baseball program with honour, dignity and professionalism both on and off the diamond during the course of the 2019 season.

WAY TO GO, TP!
