IN A MUST WIN SCENARIO, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS PREVAIL OVER ROYAL YORK RED AND MARTINGROVE GREY IN A PAIR OF THRILLING ROUND ROBIN QUALIFICATION PLAYOFF GAMES AT CHRISTIE PITS TO CONTINUE THEIR JOURNEY AT TOURNEY
Beneath a checkered duvet of warm and humid skies, the Toronto Playgrounds Minor Mosquito Selects edged the Royal York Red 8-7 in a nail biting six inning round robin qualification playoff game thriller tonight at Christie Pits Diamond 2 to advance to quarter-final round of the 2019 Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Mosquito Select Championship Tournament.
Down 6-2 in the top of the fifth, Royal York refused to go quietly into the night as they staged a miraculous four run rally to deadlock the proceedings 6-6. Androulidakis (10) delivered a key two RBI double to bring home the Cardinals tying runs.
After TP was unable to bring home the winning run in the bottom of the fifth, the game went into an extra inning under the purview of international baseball tie breaking rules. Each team would start their respective extra inning with one out and a baserunner at second base.
As the top of the sixth frame commenced, Royal York baserunner Androulidakis bolted from second and stole third base. Altosaar (24) followed with a one out RBI single to bring Androulidakis home with the go ahead run.
Unfazed, TP reliever Henry K. (13) rang up two strikeouts in the sixth to put the kibosh on the Cardinals rebellion.
In the bottom half of the sixth, as Payton (3) swiped third with Grand Theft aplomb, Charles (11) garnered a walk that put two ducks on the pond. After Charles advanced to second with a steal, Alex (65) delivered a clutch two out two RBI single that brought Payton and Charles home with TP’s winning runs.
With their victory over the Cardinals, TP finished with a not too shabby 2-1 round robin record. As such, TP will battle the Royal York White in a Sunday (August 18) morning quarter-final elimination game at Ravina Gardens.
In a rain delayed affair, Royal York jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Zaccaria (14) stroked a RBI single and Martin (9) chipped in with a RBI double to give the Red Birds the upper hand.
Toronto Playgrounds answered back with four in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 advantage. After stroking a leadoff single, Oliver (35) advanced to third courtesy of a steal and passed ball. Ben (15) followed with RBI single that brought Oliver home with TP’s first run.
Following a single by Sawyer (43), Royal York committed an error that allowed Sawyer to mosey over to second and allowed Ben to come home with the tying run.
After a two out walk by Henry B. (14) that put two capybaras on the diamond, Chase (23) delivered a grace under pressure two RBI single to bring Sawyer and Henry B. home with the go ahead runs.
In a stellar effort, TP starter Oliver held the Royal York Red offence to only two runs over four innings while striking out eight Cardinals.
Earlier in the afternoon, the TP Minor Mosquito Selects won their first round robin playoff game at the tourney with a slender tenderloin 6-5 four inning comeback win over the Martingrove Grey at Chrsitie Pits Diamond 3.
Trailing 5-4 in the final frame, TP rallied with a pair in the bottom of the fourth to usurp the White Sox. After Mike (9) reached base on a Martingrove faux pas to leadoff the inning, Henry K. and Alex garnered back to back walks to load the bases. Sawyer followed with a groundout to first that allowed Mike to come home with the tying run.
After Henry B. was intentionally walked to reload the bases, Ben drew a two out bases loaded RBI walk that brought Henry K. home with TP’s winning run.
Down 1-0, Toronto Playgrounds scored a pair of dramatic runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Alex and Sawyer used their Grand Theft acumen to steal third and force a series of White Sox errors to bring home the peameal bacon.
After Martingrove replied with two in the top of the third to retake the lead 3-2, TP struck back with a pair in the bottom portion of the inning to take back the lead 4-3. Following a two out single by Holden (25), Hudson (18) delivered a RBI double that allowed Holden to blaze home with the tying run. A series of White Sox errord on the play allowed Hudson to scoot homeward with the go ahead run.
Not to be outdone, Martingrove answered back with a pair in the top of the fourth to recapture the lead 5-4. The White Sox rally was keyed by a one out two RBI double to left field by Michael (25).
