FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS PREVAIL OVER THE RED CARDINALS AT CHRISTIE PITS TO EARN THEIR THIRD 2023 EBA 9U SELECT LOOP VICTORY.
Beneath a blanket of warm and sunny skies, the Toronto Playgrounds 9U Selects defeated the Royal York 9U Red Cardinals 21-9 in a five inning Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) 9U Select Loop game this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 3.
After Royal York Red went down quietly in the top half of the first, the TP 9U Selects exploded for a seven run tsunami in the bottom portion of the inning to stake themselves to an early 7-0 lead.
Following a pair back to back of singles by Kaden (0) and Eli O. (44) to open TP’s half of inning, Cordell (9) stepped up to the plate and delivered a majestic one out three run inside the park home run shot to the deep dish pizza nether regions of the outfield that brought the diehard TP fans seated along the third baseline to their feet in rapturous celebration.
After respective two out singles by Rowan (23) and Benji (2) put two ducks on the pond, Sean (19) stroked a clutch RBI hit that advanced Benji to third and allowed Rowan to motor home with a run.
With runners on third and first, Nicola (5) chipped in with a RBI single that moved Sean to second and brought Benji home with the TP 9U Selects fifth run.
Following a walk by Emmett (4) that loaded the bases, Jack (11) delivered a grace under pressure two RBI single that allowed Sean and Nicola with a pair of runs that brought the curtain down on the first frame.
Not taking things lying down, Royal York 9U Red answered back with a run in the top of the second inning that trimmed the margin to 7-1.
After back to back one out singles by Brody (9) and Henry (27) Jake (3) hit into a fielder’s choice that advanced Brody to third and erased Henry at second. A TP error on the play allowed Brody to come home with the Red Cardinals first run of the game.
With two outs and a runner on first, the Toronto Playgrounds defence turned in sweet gem that ended the Royal York uprising in the second frame. After Ben (17) slashed a line drive to the outfield, TP 9U Select centrefielder Arlo (13) quickly retrieved the ball and made a ICBM missile throw to shortstop Drew (12) to force out Red Cardinals baserunner Jake on a chitty chitty bang bang 8-6 play that rang up the third out.
Taking tiger mountain by strategy, the TP 9U Selects added seven more runs to their treasure chest in the bottom of the second to stretch their plurality to 14-1.
After Drew and Eli D. (8) stroked respective singles to lead off the inning and put two mallards on the pond, Whit (16) connected for a RBI hit that moved Eli D. to third base and brought Drew home with a run.
With one out and two aboard, Kaden delivered a RBI single that advanced Whit to third and allowed Eli D. to motor home with another TP run.
Eli 0. followed with a RBI hit that moved Kaden to second base and brought Whit homeward with TP’s tenth run.
The Toronto Playgrounds 9U Select conga procession continued its mighty rhythm as Arlo delivered a RBI single that allowed Kaden to score.
With runners third and second, Cordell connected for a two RBI single that brought Eli O. and Arlo home with two more TP runs.
Following a single by Carson (27) that put TP runners at third and first base, Rowan stroked a RBI hit that allowed Cordell to scoot home and give the TP 9U Selects a thirteen run upper hand over the Red Cardinals.
Refusing to go quietly into the night, the Royal York Red offence took flight in the top portion of the third frame as the Cardinals exploded for seven runs to close the gap to 14-8.
After a leadoff hit by Juca (6), Tim (31) connected for a double that put two Red Birds on the birdbath. Draper (13) followed with a RBI single that brought Juca home with a run.
With runners on second and first, David (15) stroked a RBI hit that allowed Tim to motor home with another Royal York run.
After Adriano (1) singled to load the bases, Jackson (4) delivered a two RBI hit that brought Draper and David home with a pair of runs for the Red Cardinals.
Following a single by Ryan (11) that reloaded the bases, Connor (23) stepped into the batter’s box and crushed a three RBI triple that allowed Adriano, Jackson and Ryan to come homeward and trim Royal York Red’s shortfall to six.
After the TP 9U Selects went down quietly in the bottom half of the third frame, the Royal York 9U Red added another run to their tally in the top of the fourth that closed the deficit to 14-9.
Following a pair of leadoff hits by Matteo (99) and Peter (90) that put two Cardinals on the bird feeder, Brody delivered a RBI single that allowed Matteo to zoom home with a run that whittled the deficit to five.
Shaken, bur not stirred, the TP defence rose to the challenge by turning a pretty 1-4 double play that stymied the Red Cardinals insurrection in the fourth.
After the Royal York 9U Red defence thwarted the TP 9U Selects offensive machine with two defensive gems in the bottom portion of the fourth, the Cardinals threatened to close the gap again in the top of the fifth.
However, with two Red Cardinals on base, Toronto Playgrounds made a grand defensive stand that stymied Royal York’s comeback bid.
The TP 9U Selects turned in a pair of groundouts (1-6 and 1-3) that stalled the Cards momentum. Sandwiched in between those sweet putouts, TP 9U Select right fielder Arlo made a stellar catch on a deep fly ball off the bat of David to rob him of a surefire RBI payday.
Taking care of business, a reinvigorated Toronto Playgrounds tacked on seven insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to solidify their lead at 21-9.
After back to back singles by Milo (99) and Kaden to lead off the inning, Eli O. connected for a RBI double that moved Kaden to third and brought Milo home with a run.
With runners on third and second, Arlo crushed a RBI sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Kaden to hustle home with another TP run.
With one out, the Royal York 9U Red refused to accept their fate and doggedly continued to make a defensive stand against TP. On the next play, Cordell hit an eight mile high pop up down the third baseline. Battling the glare of the setting sun, Royal York Red pitcher David made a spectacular shoestring catch in his mitt to tally the second out.
However, TP would not be denied. With a runner on second, Carson stroked a clutch two out RBI hit that brought Eli O. home with a run.
Following back to back hits by Rowan and Benji to load the bases, Sean delivered a RBI single that allowed Carson to motor home with TP’s eighteenth run.
With the bases still juiced to the gills, Nicola connected for a RBI single that brought Rowan home with a run. A Royal York error on the play would allow Sean and Nicola to advance respectively to third and second base, and bring Benji homeward with another TP run.
For the icing on the TP cake, Emmett (4) stroked a RBI single that allowed Sean to hustle home with the final run of the game.
