Beneath a honeysuckled ceiling of warm summer skies, the Toronto Playgrounds 9U Selects defeated the Martingrove 9U White 20-1 in three lickety-split innings of 2023 Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) 9U Select action tonight at Christie Pits Diamond 3.
In the top half of the first inning, the Martingrove 9U White jumped out to an early 1-0 lead.
Following a leadoff single by Lucas (10), Ben (90) delivered a scorching RBI double that allowed Lucas to hustle home with the opening run of the proceedings.
The White Sox continued to apply pressure after Jack (11) stroked a single that put two runners on base. However, the Martingrove bats went cold as they were unable to capitalize their additional opportunities in the first frame.
With rough and rowdy resolve, Toronto Playgrounds answered back with half a dozen in the bottom of the first frame to take a 6-1 advantage.
Following back to back singles by Carson (27) and Whit (16) to lead off the inning, Emmett (4) muscled a RBI hit that advanced Whit to second base and brought Carson home with the tying run.
With two ducks on the pond, Cordell (9) stepped into the batter’s box and cranked a Say Hey three run home run blast that brought the rabid TP fans in the bleacher seats to their feet in cataclysmic jubilation!
After a pair of two out singles by Eli D (8) and Jack (11) that put two runners on the dance floor, Nicola (5) delivered a clutch two RBI double that allowed Eli D and Jack to motor home with two more TP runs.
Taking umbrage at their situation, Martingrove 9U White refused to go quietly into the night in the top of the second inning.
Following a leadoff hit by Wyndsor (19), Dean (5) stroked a single that put a pair of White Sox runners on the basepaths.
Refusing to pussyfoot around the marigold bush, the TP defence turned in a pair of 6-4 putouts that extinguished the Martingrove uprising in the second frame.
Putting the pedal to the metal, the TP 9U Selects exploded for seven runs in the bottom portion of the second frame to increase their plurality to 13-1.
Following a pair of singles by Milo (99) and Drew (12) that put two swans on the lake to open the inning, Carson delivered a RBI hit that advanced Drew to third base and brought Milo home with a TP run.
With two aboard, Whit connected for a RBI single that moved Carson to third base and allowed Drew to zoom home with another TP run.
Keeping the TP conga procession moving, Emmett hit into a groundout that advanced Whit to second base and brought Carson homeward with a TP run.
With one out and a runner on second base, Cordell powered a one out RBI triple that allowed Whit to score another TP run.
Keeping the train a-rollin’, Benji (2) followed with RBI hit that brought Cordell home with a TP run.
With two outs and a runner on second base, Eli D stroked a RBI single that allowed Benji to come homeward with another TP run.
After a single by Jack that put runners at second and first base, Nicola capped off TP’s Grand Big Mac inning with a RBI double that brought Eli D home to roost.
Refusing to throw in the towel, the pesky Martingrove 9U White continued to battle in the top of the third frame as Ben stroked a single to keep their comeback hopes alive.
After Myles (1) powered a scorching line drive to the outfield, TP centre fielder Emmett swooped in like a gazelle to make a spectacular sliding basket catch that put a kibosh on the White Sox rally bid in the third inning.
Taking care of business, Toronto Playgrounds added seven insurance runs to their Bitcoin account in the bottom vector of the third inning to secure their upper hand at 20-1.
After an immaculate leadoff double by Sean (19), Milo and Drew followed with respective singles to load the bases. Carson followed with a two RBI single that advanced Drew to second base and allowed Sean and Milo to zoom home with a pair of TP runs.
With opportunity knockin’ on the door, Whit connected for a two RBI triple that brought Drew and Carson homeward with two more TP runs.
Cool as a cucumber, Emmett followed with a RBI single that allowed Whit to motor home with a TP run.
Following a single by Cordell that put TP runners on baser, Benji stroked a RBI hit that brought that brought Emmett home with another TP run.
For the pièce de résistance, Rowan (23) hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Cordell to hustle home with TP’s final run in the third frame.
