Beneath a genteel duvet of sunny and cloudy skies, Toronto Playgrounds 9U prevailed 18-13 over the Royal York 9U Girls in a five inning 2024 Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) 9U Select Loop season opener tonight at Christie Pits Diamond 3.
Taking flight, the Royal York 9U Girls staked themselves to an early 4-0 lead in the top portion of the first inning.
Following a leadoff double by Rowan (5), Olivia T. (4) stroked a clutch two out RBI single that brought Rowan home with the opening run of the game.
After Ava (19) reached base on a single that put two runners on base, Avalyn (1) delivered an immaculate two RBI triple that allowed Olivia T. and Ava to fly home to the nest with two Cardinal runs.
Chirping at the bird feeder for more, Grace (11) muscled a RBI hit that brought Avalyn home with another Royal York run.
Not to be outdone, TP 9U quickly answered back with a seven run fusillade in the bottom of the first frame to take a 7-4 advantage.
Following back to back singles by Ambrose (3) and Owen (9) to open TP’s half of the inning, Santiago (25) delivered a RBI hit that allowed Ambrose to motor home with TP 9U’s first run of the proceedings.
With runners on third and first, Eamon (1) stroked a RBI single that brought Owen home to roost. A Royal York error on the play would allow Eamon to advance to third base and Santiago to hustle homeward with another TP run that trimmed the shortfall to one.
Drew (12) followed suit with a RBI single that allowed Eamon to motor home with TP’s tying run.
With a TP runner on first, Zebby (15) powered a RBI triple that brought Drew home with TP’s go ahead score.
Jacob (16) followed with a 1-3 groundout that allowed Zebby to blaze home with another TP run.
After a pair of one out singles by Kai (2) and Robbie (27) that put two runners on the dance floor, Ciaran (11) muscled a RBI hit that brought Kai homeward with a TP run.
In the top of the second, the TP 9U defence stymied the Royal York 9U Girls attack with a pair of ready steady defensive putouts [5-4 and 6-5] that kept the high flying Cardinals off the scoresheet and in the birdbath.
Toronto Playgrounds added a dramatic run to their tally in the bottom half of the second inning to increase their plurality to 8-4.
With one out, Ezra (10) crushed a shot to the Chicago deep dish pizza nether regions of centre field for a HOLY COW! solo inside the park home run blast that brought the TP players and fans to their feet in jubilant celebration.
Refusing to go quietly into the night, the Royal York 9U Girls flexed their wings and replied with five runs in the top of the third inning to regain the upper hand 9-8.
After a leadoff hit by Levana (9), Clementine (3) and Charlotte (28) connected for back to back singles that loaded the bases. Olivia T. followed with a one out two RBI hit that moved Charlotte to second base and allowed Levana and Clementine to motor home with a pair of runs for the Cardinals.
Ava followed suit with a RBI single that advanced Olivia T. to third base and brought Charlotte home with a Royal York Girls run that trimmed the deficit to one.
With runners on third and second base, Avalyn muscled a RBI hit that moved Ava over to third base and allowed Olivia T. to zip homeward with the Cardinals tying run.
With a pair of Cardinals perched on the bird feeder, Grace delivered a RBI single that brought Ava home with Royal York’s go ahead run.
Reelin’ and rockin’, the TP 9U defence stemmed the bleeding when they turned in two big defensive plays [F7 and a 6-5] to terminate the Royal York Girls insurrection in the third frame.
Licking their chops, Toronto Playgrounds punched back with a six run assault in the bottom of the third inning to regain the lead 14-9.
After Eamon reached base on a fielder’s choice, Drew turned on the afterburners and hustled down the first baseline for a one out single that put TP runners at third and first base.
Zebby followed with a RBI double that advanced Drew to third and allowed Eamon to zoom home with the tying run.
With opportunity knocking on heaven’s door, Jacob delivered a RBI single that moved Zebby to third and brought Drew homeward with TP’s go ahead run.
Kai followed with a scorching RBI hit that advanced Jacob to second base and allowed Zebby to zoom home with another TP run.
Following a single by Robbie that loaded the bases, Ciaran powered a searing two RBI single that moved Robbie to third base and brought Jacob and Kai home with two more TP runs.
For the icing on the cake, Greyson (17) followed with a RBI hit that allowed Robbie to scoot home with a TP run.
Refusing to throw in the towel, the Royal York 9U Girls battled back with three in the top of the fourth inning to close the gap to 14-12.
After a pair of singles by Shay (10) and Summer (18) that put two runners on base, Rowan delivered a clutch two out two RBI double that brought Shay and Summer home to the nest with a two Cardinal runs.
Following a single by Clementine that put two Red Birds on the basepaths, Charlotte muscled a RBI hit that advanced Clementine to third and allowed Rowan to fly home with a Royal York run that closed the margin to two.
Answering the clarion call, TP 9U replied with a pair in the bottom portion of the fourth inning to stretch their lead to 16-12.
After Landry (14) led off the inning with a double, Ambrose stroked a RBI hit that allowed Landry to zoom home with a TP run.
Subsequently, with two outs and a TP runner on second base, Eamon delivered a RBI single that brought Landry home to crow with another insurance run.
With no desire to accept their fate, The Royal York 9U Girls clawed back with a run in the top of the fifth inning to close the gap to 16-13.
After a leadoff hit by Avalyn, Mia (15) stroked a two out single that put two Red Birds on the discoteque floor. With runners at third and first base, Olivia C. (7) chirped in with a grace under pressure two out RBI hit that allowed Avalyn to motor home with a Royal York run.
For good measure, Toronto Playgrounds tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth frame to solidify their lead at 18-13.
Following a pair of singles by Zebby and Jacob to begin the inning, Kai delivered a RBI hit that allowed Zebby to blaze home with a TP run.
Subsequently, with one out and runners on third and first, Greyson hit into a fielder’s choice that brought Jacob home with TP 9U’s final run of the game.
