FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS GROUND THE CARDINALS IN A MOTHER’S DAY ETOBICOKE BASEBALL ASSOCIATION (EBA) 11U MOSQUITO SELECT LOOP CONTEST AT CHRISTIE PITS
Beneath a pristine ceiling of warm and sunny skies, the Toronto Playgrounds 11U Red defeated the Royal York 11U White 13-1 in a 4 ½ inning Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) 11U Mosquito Select game tonight at Christie Pits Diamond 3.
A feisty Royal York White squad threatened in the top portion of the first frame. Following a walk by Cole (15) and a single by Bennett (1) that opened the proceedings, Felix (27) garnered a walk to load the bases.
Unfazed, TP 11U Red starter Paul (77) kept the Royal York offence off the scoring ledger in the first inning when he found his mojo jojo by tallying a pop out and two strikeouts to vanquish the threat and leave the Cardinals baserunners perched in the bird bath.
Making the most of their opportunities, Toronto Playgrounds staked themselves to a 4-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning.
After a leadoff walk by Eli O (44), Arlo (13) followed with a Say Hey! RBI triple that allowed Eli O to motor homeward with the opening run of the game.
With the potential of more gravy awaiting at third base, Paul delivered a RBI hit that brought Arlo home with a TP run.
Following a derring-do theft of second base by Paul, Kaden (0) drew a walk that put two ducks on the pond. It was at this juncture where TP 11U Red executed a ballsy double steal that saw Paul and Kaden advance respectively to third and second. On the play, the Royal York 11U White defence committed an error that allowed Kaden to move over to third base and allowed Paul to blaze homeward with a TP run.
Wanting more, more, more, Cordell (23) stroked an Andrea True Connection RBI hit that brought Kaden home with another TP run.
In a gutsy foray on the hill, Royal York 11U White starter Owen (8) faced five TP batters in the first frame.
Taking a measure of umbrage at their situation, the Royal York 11U White offence stirred to life in the top of the second inning as they answered back with a run that trimmed the shortfall to 4-1.
After a leadoff walk by Marcus (14) and a single by Coltyn (4), Owen (8) was hit by pitch to load the bases. Wyatt (9) followed with a 9-3 fielder’s choice that allowed Marcus to hustle home with the Cardinals first run.
With no desire to pussyfoot around, TP 11U Red starter Paul rang up two strikeouts to leave the bases loaded and the Cardinals tethered to the bird feeder.
Taking care of business, TP 11U Red replied with four in the bottom portion of the second inning to widen their upper hand to 8-1.
Displaying patience at the plate, Emmett (4), Carson (27) and Rudy (10) garnered consecutive walks to load the bases. Whit (16) followed with a bases loaded walk that brought Emmett home to roost.
With the bases still packed tighter than a can of King Oscar sardines, Benji (15) stepped into the batter’s box and delivered a two RBI single that advanced Whit to second base and allowed Carson and Rudy to zoom home with a pair of TP runs.
Following a Cardinals wild pitch that allowed Whit and Benji to move respectively to third and second, Maxwell (03) drew a walk to reload the bases. Milo (24) followed with a one out bases loaded RBI walk that pushed Whit homeward with another TP run.
In a nitty gritty foray on the mound, Royal York 11U White reliever Marcus struck out one in the second frame while facing eight TP batters.
Royal York 11U White threatened in the top of the third inning after a leadoff hit by Daniel (17) and a walk by Cole put two Cardinals on the dance floor.
Cool as iceberg lettuce, TP 11U Red reliever Emmett diffused the sticky wicket situation when he chalked up a groundout, strikeout and pop out to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard in the third frame.
Going for the jugular, Toronto Playgrounds added another four gold doubloons to their treasure trove in the bottom of the third to extend their plurality to 12-1.
After hitting a leadoff single, Eli D (8) turned on the afterburners and swiped his way around the horn to third base with Grand Theft bravado. Arlo followed with a one out RBI double that brought Eli D home with a TP run.
Subsequently, with two outs and a TP runner on third, Kaden delivered a grace under pressure RBI hit that allowed Arlo to score.
Following a walk by Cordell that put two mallards on the lake, Emmett powered a clutch two RBI single to bring Kaden and Cordell home with two additional TP runs.
In a workmanlike effort on the hill, Royal York 11U reliever Marcus rang up two strikeouts in the third frame while facing seven TP batters.
With 1-2-3 precision, TP 11U Red reliever Emmett retired the Royal York lineup in order with a strikeout, lineout and a groundout in the top half of the fourth frame.
Emmett received a pair of stellar plays from the TP defence during the inning. With one out, Leo (99) smoked a scorcher between second and first base. However, TP second baseman Paul made a sweet catch in his trusty mitt to take away a sure hit away from Leo.
With two outs, TP shortstop Kaden sucked up a hot tamale shot off the bat of Marcus like a Kirby vacuum cleaner and made a laser toss across the diamond to first baseman Arlo to ring up a Holy Cow! 6-3 putout that brought the curtain down on the Cardinals portion of the fourth inning.
TP 11U Red tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth to secure their lead at 13-1.
Following a leadoff single and stolen base by Carson, Rudy delivered a RBI double that allowed Carson to hustle home with a TP run.
Royal York 11U White reliever Ethan (2) chalked up a groundout and two strikeouts in the fourth frame to extinguish the TP insurgency.
Refusing to go quietly into the night, the pesky Cardinals continued to battle as they stepped up for their last at bats in the top of the fifth inning.
Following a walk by Owen, Cash (11) garnered a walk that put two Royal York runners on base.
With a distaste for any more tomfoolery, TP 11U Red closer Eli D tallied three groundouts to end the Cardinals resistance in the fifth frame and bring the curtain down on the TP victory.
And a special tip of the cap to TP 11U Red first baseman Cordell for making two solo putouts that stymied Royal York in the fifth inning.
