FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS TAKE DOWN THE WHITE SOX IN AN ETOBICOKE BASEBALL ASSOCIATION (EBA) 11U MOSQUITO SELECT LOOP AFFAIR AT CHRISTIE PITS
Beneath a warm blanket of sunny and hazy skies, Toronto Playgrounds 11U Blue defeated the Martingrove 11U Grey 20-2 in a five inning Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) 11U Select Loop game tonight at Christie Pits Diamond 2.
In the top portion of the first frame, Martingrove 11U Grey threatened after Jamie (4) got on base with a walk.
Cool as a head of iceberg lettuce, TP 11U Blue starter Ellis (44) rang up three electrifying strikeouts that kept the White Sox offense off the scoreboard and mired in the laundry hamper.
Taking full advantage of a scrumptious Mandarin Buffet serving of seven consecutive walks doled out by Martingrove, Toronto Playgrounds staked themselves to an early 4-0 upper hand in the bottom of the first.
After back to back to back walks by Dylan (8), Eli (7) and Julian (26) that loaded bases, Ellis, Wilt (2), Cole (23) and Dominic (24) followed suit with respective bases loaded RBI walks that allowed Dylan, Eli, Julian and Ellis to saunter homeward with four TP runs.
In a spirited foray on the mound, Martingrove 11U Grey starter Ben (9) faced seven TP 11U Blue batters in the first frame.
The Martingrove 11U Grey attack stirred to life in the top of the second when they tallied a run that trimmed the gap to 4-1.
After Jacob (8) reached base on a hit by pitch to begin the inning, Tiago (99) and Evan (1) stroked back to back singles to load the bases. Subsequently, Nolan (12) worked the count in his favor and drew a bases loaded RBI walk that brought Jacob home with the White Sox first run of the game.
With the bases still packed tighter than a can of Spam and the White Sox on the cusp of a big time rally, TP 11U Blue starter Ellis found his mojo jojo and reeled off three strikeouts that extinguished the Martingrove 11U Grey uprising in the second frame.
Grabbing the bull by the horns, TP answered back with a four spot in the bottom half of the second inning that increased their plurality to 8-1.
After a leadoff hit by Casey (27), Emile (5) drew a walk and Dylan singled to load the bases. Julian and Ellis followed with back to back one out bases loaded RBI walks that allowed Casey and Emile to shuffle homeward with a pair of TP runs.
With the bases still loaded down like a Lou Malnati’s deep dish pizza, Wilt delivered a two RBI double that advanced Ellis to third and brought Dylan and Julian home with two more TP runs.
In a valorous effort, Martingrove 11U reliever Owen (83) tallied a fly out while facing seven TP batters in the second frame.
With a modicum of umbrage at their situation, Martingrove 11U Grey gamely replied with a run in the top of the third inning to trim the deficit to 8-2.
After Ben (21) reached base on a hit by pitch to open the inning, Jason (11) singled and Jamie drew a walk with one out to load the bases. Subsequently, Masom (27) stroked a clutch RBI single that allowed Ben to scoot home with a White Sox run.
With the bases loaded, TP 11U Blue reliever Julian entered the fray from the bullpen to wheel and deal two sizzling strikeouts that left the bases loaded and subdued the Maringrove 11U Grey mutiny in the third frame.
Going for the jugular, Toronto Playgrounds added four doubloons to their offshore Cayman Islands bank account in the bottom of the third to increase their assets to 12-2.
Following a leadoff walk, Cole (23) turned on the afterburners and brazenly swiped his way around the horn to third base. After a walk by Dominic, TP executed a ballsy double steal that allowed Dominic to advance to second base and brought Cole home with a run. A Martingrove faux pas on the play allowed Dominic to move over to third.
After Casey reached base on hit by pitch that put two mallards on the lake, Emile connected for a RBI single that advanced Casey to third and allowed Dominic to score.
Following a walk by Dylan that loaded the bases, Eli delivered a two RBI double that moved Dylan to third and brought Casey and Emile homeward with two more TP runs.
In a plucky effort, Martingrove 11U Grey reliever Tiago faced six TP 11U Blue batters in the third frame.
Refusing to go quietly into the abyss, a pesky Martingrove 11U Grey squad continued to battle with determination in the top portion of the fourth inning.
Following a one out walk, Martingrove 11U Grey baserunner Evan threw caution to the wind as he made an intrepid decision to steal second base. As Evan charged towards pay dirt, TP catcher Dylan made a lightning throw to second baseman Cole, who adroitly tagged out Evan to ring up a Cracker Jack 2-4 defensive gem for the second out.
With two White Sox runners on base, TP 11U Blue reliever Julian chalked up two strikeouts to diffuse the Martingrove threat in the fourth frame.
Putting the pedal to the metal, TP 11U Blue tacked on four insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their upper hand to 16-2.
After leading off the inning with a single, Julian advanced to second base on a White Sox error.
With Captain Crunch flair, Ellis followed with a Say Hey RBI triple that brought Julian home with a TP run.
With one out, Cole (23) stroked a RBI hit that allowed Ellis to motor home with a TP run.
Following a single by Dominic that put runners at second and first base, Casey stroked a RBI hit moved Dominic to third and brought Cole homeward with another TP run.
For the pièce de résistance, Emile capped off TP’s productive inning with a RBI single that advanced Casey to second and allowed Dominic to score.
In a stout performance, Martingrove 11U Grey reliever Evan tallied a lineout while facing seven TP 11U Blue batters in the fourth frame.
Proudly donning their rally caps, Martingrove 11U Grey refused to surrender as they took their last at bats in the top of the fifth.
Determined to keep the White Sox comeback hopes alive, Patrick (5) led off the inning with a single and stolen base.
With no desire to pussyfoot around the cherry tree, TP 11U Blue reliever Julian rung up two strikeouts and a groundout in the fifth frame that put the kibosh on Martingrove’s last gasp rally bid and seal the deal on a dominating TP victory.
Toronto Playgrounds added four runs to their treasure trove in the bottom portion of the fifth frame to solidify their lead at 20-2.
After a leadoff walk by Dylan, Eli muscled a RBI double that put TP runners at third and second base. With one out, Ellis delivered a two RBI double that brought Dylan and Eli homeward with a pair of TP runs.
Following a single by Wilt, Cole garnered a walk that loaded the bases. With two outs, Dominic muscled a groundout that advanced Wilt and Cole respectively to third and second base, and allowed Ellis to motor home with another TP run.
After Casey was hit by pitch to reload the bases, Emile followed with a two out bases loaded RBI walk that brought Wilt home with the final run of the proceedings.
In a gallant effort, Martingrove 11U releiever Jason chalked up a pop out and groundout while pitching to nine TP 11U Blue batters in the fifth frame.
