TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS, TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS POWER THEIR WAY OVER THE WHITE SOX TO WIN THEIR SECOND EBA SELECT GAME OF THE SEASON AT CHRISTIE PITSBeneath a layer of warm and sunny skies, our Toronto Playgrounds Major Peewee Selects defeated the Martingrove White Sox 13-5 in 3 ½ innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Select action this afternoon at Christie Pits Diamond 2.
Toronto Playgrounds was all business on the diamond from the get go as they laundered the White Sox to earn their second victory of the 2014 season and remain undefeated.
TP starter Tyler (42) struck out two in the top of the first to keep Martingrove off the scoresheet.
In the bottom of the first, the Major Peewee Selects took no prisoners as they sent fourteen batters to the plate and exploded for nine runs to take a 9-0 lead over the White Sox.
Cam (77) and Zack (32) led off the big inning with back to back walks to put two runners on base. A subsequent pick off attempt by Martingrove starter Jonathon (14) went awry and allowed Cam to motor home with the game’s first run.
Jack H. (27) followed with a deep dish pizza two run home run shot to centre field that put TP up 3-0.
After a sizzling triple by Sasha (28), Adam delivered a RBI sacrifice hit to bring Sasha home to increase the margin to four.
With one out, Arlo (7) and Jack K. (13) drew a pair of consecutive walks to put two on base. Another subsequent White Sox error would allow Arlo to score. Jacob (2) followed with a RBI single that allowed Jack K. to come home to roost. Troy (37) followed suit with a RBI single that brought in Jacob and widen the TP advantage to 7-0.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Zack delivered a clutch 2 RBI single that brought home Troy and Tyler.
Martingrove clean up hitter Joseph (6) powered a solo home run shot to deep centre to lead off the top of the second to put the White Sox on the scorecard and trim the deficit to eight.
Energized by his blast, the White Sox proceeded to load the bases with no outs. However, the Toronto Playgrounds defense rose to the occasion to subdue the Martingrove rally by turning a Gold Glove 1-2-3 double play.
With the bases juiced to the gills, TP starter Tyler enticed Julian (13) to ground back to the pitching mound. Tyler fielded the ball and threw home to catcher Sasha for the force out of Hewitt (43) at home. Then Sasha rifled a laser throw to first baseman Jack H. at first for the second out.
Tyler proceeded to strike out Justin H. (9) to close out the inning and keep the White Sox in the hamper.
Going for the jugular, the Major Peewee Selects added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the second to increase their lead to 11-1.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Troy delivered a grace under pressure RBI single that allowed Sasha to saunter homeward. Tyler followed with a bases loaded RBI walk that brought in Arlo.
With his teammates playing some stingy defense behind him, TP reliever Owen (5) mowed down one in the top of the third to keep the White Sox off the scoring ledger.
In the bottom of the third, TP added another two to the tally to widen their lead to 13-1. With two outs and a runner on base, Sasha powered a clutch RBI triple to score Zack. Adam followed with a RBI single to bring in Sasha.
Refusing to surrender, a pesky Martingrove team circled the wagons in the top of the fourth and rallied for four to trim the deficit to eight. The highlight of the rally was the second home run of the game by Joseph of the White Sox. Joseph’s second solo homer was a mammoth shot that cleared the fence in left centre field with the ball landing in the grass of Dominico Field.
Shaken, but not stirred, TP closer Troy (37) eventually extinguished the White Sox comeback attempt. With two outs, Troy made Matthew Y. (5) pop up to third for the final out. Third baseman Tyler made an all star sliding catch to snare the dying quail and end the game.
The Major Peewee Selects (2-0) next game is on Wednesday, May 28 when they host the Annette A’s at Christie Pits Diamond 2 at 7:00 p.m.
