THE WOLVERINES PREVAIL OVER TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS IN A HIT PARADE AT CHRISTIE PITS

Zach (19) delivers a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth inning against Weston Wolverines. Zach would spark the TP attack by going 4 for 4 at the plate [three singles and a double] while scoring two runs and delivering 2 RBI’s.

Beneath a layer of overcast skies, the Weston Wolverines defeated the Toronto Playgrounds Minor Rookie Ball Selects 15-10 in five innings of Etobicoke Baseball Association (EBA) Select action this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 3.

With Weston only having six players available for the game, TP kindly loaned the undermanned Wolverines two players from their squad in a gesture of good sportsmanship so the game could be played eight on eight. Kudos to TP’s Willy (6) and Henry B. (14) for helping out Weston in a pinch.

The proceeding was an entertaining affair contested between two talented teams. It was a hit parade where both squads combined for forty-one hits over the course of five frames. In a seesaw rollercoaster battle, the Wolverines ultimately prevailed for victory with a huge seven run rally in the final inning.

In the top of the first, Weston went down quietly on a strikeout and a pair of groundouts.

Holden (25) and Theo (3) would hit respective singles in the bottom of the first to put two mallards on the lake. However, TP could not bring them home and left them stranded.

The Wolverines would leap out to a 3-0 lead in the top half of the second. After a leadoff single by Myles (32), Willy would deliver a one out RBI triple to bring Myles home with the opening run of the game.

With two outs and one aboard, Shayden (20) would stroke a RBI double to bring home Willy.

Following a single by Reilly (16) that put two aboard, Jake (25) would deliver a RBI hit to plate Shayden.

With grit and determination, TP would answer back with half a dozen in the bottom of the second to take a 6-3 lead. Following a leadoff double by Zach (19), Michael (9) would stroke a RBI single to bring Zach home with TP’s first run.

After a one out single by Nathan (29) that put two ducks on the pond, Holden would deliver a RBI single to bring home Michael and pull TP within one.

With two aboard, Qayam (11) would stroke a RBI single to bring Nathan home with the tying run. Theo would follow with a RBI hit that allowed Holden to come homeward with the go ahead run.

Still with two runners on the base paths, Zach would deliver a clutch two out two RBI single to bring Qayam and Theo homeward bound.

However, the pesky Wolverines would claw back with ferocity in the top of the third as they parlayed six hits into four runs to retake the lead 7-6. After consecutive one out singles by Willy, Henry B. and Shayden that loaded the bases, Reilly, Jake and Ronnie (00) followed with a conga line procession of RBI singles that allowed Weston to tie the game.

With the bases still juiced to the gills, Myles would hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Reilly to come home to roost with the go ahead run.

TP would grind out a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game 7-7. With two outs and Qayam on first base on a fielder’s choice, Theo would put the ball into play towards third base. However, the Weston defence would commit a major faux pas on the play that allowed Theo to scamper to second and Qayam to motor home with the tying run.

Weston would retake the lead 8-7 in the top of the fourth. Following a two out double by Shayden, Reilly would deliver a grace under pressure RBI double to bring Shayden home with the go ahead score.

The TP defence shone in the fourth when right fielder Zach made a Gold Glove catch on a fly ball to rob Willy of a sure hit and ring up the first out of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, TP would plate three and retake the lead 10-8. Following a pair of back to back singles by Zach and Michael that put two swans on the inlet, Nathan (29) would stroke a one out RBI single to deliver Zach home with the tying run.

With two aboard, Holden would deliver a RBI single to bring Michael home with the go ahead run. Qayam would follow with a fielder’s choice that allowed Nathan to score.

Refusing to surrender, the Wolverines would unleash a nine hit barrage and bite back with a seven run rally in the top of the fifth to take a 15-10 advantage. With the bases loaded, Henry B. would hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Myles to come home and trim the deficit to one.

Shayden would follow with a RBI single that delivered Willy home with the tying run. Next, Reilly would stroke a RBI hit to bring Henry B. home with the go ahead score.

With two outs and two aboard, Ronnie would deliver a clutch two RBI double that allowed Shayden and Reilly to come homeward bound.

Myles followed with a RBI double to plate Ronnie. Jayden (9) would stroke a RBI single to bring Myles home to do the shimmy, shimmy, shake.

In the bottom of the fifth, TP went quietly into the night as they were unable to rally to usurp the Wolverines.
