TP SELECT: Toronto Playgrounds Edges Royal York (2) 7-6 In A Nailbiter

PEEWEE SELECTS HANG ON FOR FOURTH VICTORY OF THE SEASON

2011 Toronto Playgrounds Peewee Select Team

The Toronto Playgrounds Peewee Select Team fended off a late Royal York rally to win 7-6 in five innings of play at Christie Pits Diamond # 2 last night.

Cooper (8) pitched a scoreless first inning while striking out two.

Runs were at a premium in the early portion of the game for both teams. The TP pitching staff was able to silence the potent Royal York bats through the first three innings. Standout performances came from Cooper (8) who allowed no runs and struck out two in the first inning and Cameron (1) who pitched a scoreless second.

As the TP pitchers kept Royal York off the scoreboard, the Peewee Select offense was able to generate just enough offense against a tough opponent to build a 2-0 lead after three innings. Morgan (24) singled in the first inning to bring home the first run and Mikel (2) delivered the second run with a single in the third.

Trailing 2-0 after three innings, the slumbering Royal York offense finally awoke and scored four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.

However, the Peewee Selects answered right back with five runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth retake the lead, 7-4.

In the top of the fifth,  a tenacious Royal York squad scored two to make it a one run game. However, their rally fell short as Toronto Playgrounds finally closed it out for their fourth win of the season.

Kudos to Naiemul (7) for his spectacular defensive play in the third inning as he made a super catch in centrefield and assisted in a double play at the plate to end the inning.

The TP Peewee Selects (4-2) next game is on the road against Bloordale at Millwood on Wednesday, July 20 (7 p.m.).
