MOSQUITO > DAY 2: Lizzies Top Cubs 6-4

IN A CLOSE GAME, THE GO GO LIZZIES PREVAIL OVER THE CUBBIES TO WIN THEIR FIRST ROUND ROBIN GAME

TWO ACES > From top to bottom: Both Lizzies reliever Jeremy (8) and Cubs reliever Max (7) pitched two scoreless innings while striking out six at Christie Pits Diamond 3.

Beneath beautiful summer skies this evening, the Lizzies prevailed 6-4 over the Cubs in four innings at Christie Pits Diamond 3 to win their first game of the Mosquito Division Round Robin.

It was an entertaining and well played game by both teams. Like bookends, all the offense for both the Cubs and Lizzies were scored in the first two innings and some stellar pitching from both squads came to the forefront in the latter two.

Lizzies reliever Sam (7) pitched a workmanlike second inning where he allowed one unearned run while striking out three Cubs.

The Lizzies took advantage of four walks and a hit batsman to score three runs in the top of the first to surge ahead 3-0. The key hit that sparked the Lizzies attack was a RBI single delivered by Jeremy (8).

In the bottom of the first, the Cubs answered back with three runs to tie the game. The Cubbies took advantage of five walks and a hit batsman to even the match.

However, the Lizzies made the most of their opportunities in the top of the second as they parlayed five walks and a hit batsman into three runs to take the lead 6-3.

The Cubbies took advantage of three walks to score one run the bottom of the second to trim the deficit to two. The highlight of the inning was a super three strikeout effort by Lizzies reliever Sam (7) to limit the potent Cubs offense to one unearned run.

It was at this juncture of the game where the bullpens of both teams came front and centre in the proceedings.

Cubs reliever Max (7) pitched two solid innings, where he allowed no runs, while striking out six Lizzies batters during the third and fourth innings. Max’s effort kept his team within striking distance of a possible rally.

However, Lizzies reliever Jeremy (8) derailed the Cubs comeback hopes in the third and fourth as he pitched two stellar innings, where he allowed no runs, while striking out six Cubs batters to seal the deal.

The Lizzies (1-0) play their next round robin game against the Giants (0-0) on Thursday evening at Christie Pits Diamond 3.  Meanwhile, the Cubs (0-1) will face the Pirates (1-0) on Friday evening at Diamond 3.
