ON AN EXTREMELY HUMID AND DOG DAY AFTERNOON, A VALIANT TORONTO PLAYGROUNDS RALLY IN THE FINAL INNING COMES UP SHORT AS THE A’s HANG ON FOR THE VICTORY AT CHRISTIE PITS

Playing beneath the unrelenting rays of the hot summer sun on an extremely humid afternoon at Christie Pits Diamond 2, the Annette A’s prevailed 16-11 over our TP Mosquito Selects in a five inning hot tin roof EBA West Select Loop barnburner.

Annette made the most of their offensive opportunities as they built a 12-0 lead through three innings of play.

Meanwhile, Toronto Playgrounds was unable to generate any offense in the first three innings as A’s starter Seth (52) and reliever Connor (2) combined to limit the Mosquito Selects to a walk and a single while striking out six TP batters.

TP reliever Aaron (23) threw a scoreless fourth against Annette while striking out two A's.

In the top of the fourth, TP reliever Aaron (23) kept Annette off the scoreboard with a super two strikeout effort.

The Mosquito Selects rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to nine. After a two out single by Oly (6), Leandro delivered him home with a RBI single.

After a single by Alex (2) put two TP runners on base, Louis (16) stroked a RBI single to score Leandro. On a double steal, Alex was able to motor home with another run.

Annette added four insurance runs in the top of the fifth to stretch their advantage to 16-3.

Refusing to wave the white flag of surrender, Toronto Playgrounds staged a tenacious comeback attempt in the bottom of the fifth.

With two outs and two runners on base, Nigel (20) hit a RBI single to score Aaron. Alden (7) and Ben (4) followed with respective RBI singles to bring Harris (19) and Nigel home.

After Solomon (1) reached base on an Annette error to load the bases, Oly stroked a clutch two RBI double to bring Alden and Ben homeward bound.

Down 16-8, TP scored another run when Solomon was able to motor home after an Annette error.

After a walk to Leandro, Alex delivered a two RBI single to score Oly and Leandro.

Trailing 16-11, TP’s valiant eight rally came to end with a close play at home plate.

Here are some additional highlights:

  • Mosquito Select shortstop Oliver (24) made a Gold Glove catch on a sizzling hot liner for the second out in the first inning.
  • TP second baseman Ben (4) and first baseman Alden (7) combined on a picturesque 4-3 putout for the first out in the third inning.
  • Mosquito Select first baseman Nigel (20) made a nice unassisted putout at first on a hot ground ball for the second out in the third inning.
  • TP left fielder Leandro (10) made a spectacular sliding catch in the webbing of his glove on a dying fly ball to record the first out in the fifth inning.

As of press time, the Mosquito Selects (2-5) were travelling to Smythe Park to play York in a Sunday (July 14) evening affair at 6:00 p.m.
