A Message to our Toronto Playgrounds House League Players, Parents, Coaches, and Friends,
We want to make sure everyone knows that this Sunday, September 15 is the second annual Toronto Playgrounds House League Baseball Derby for Distance Event! Last year we had 150 participants competing in five different age categories and it was a great success.
The way the Derby works is people pay to hit against one of our pitching machines, and all of the money raised goes to our league to help provide new equipment, pay for our permit fees, etc. It costs $10.00 for ten pitches and $20.00 for 30 pitches, so we’re encouraging all of you to participate but also to bring along any friends who would like to take part! The Derby will run from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Sunday, but we won’t be selling any tickets after 2:30.
This year we are hoping to accommodate more participants by having two pitching machines set up on two diamonds…there will be a machine on diamond 2 which will be pitching at a maximum speed of 40 mph (64 kilometres per hour) and the larger machine at diamond 1 pitching at speeds of 60 mph (97 kilometres per hour) and 80 mph (129 kilometres per hour). Participants can obviously choose the diamond and speed they prefer. Balls hit into play will receive points based on the distance they travel.
There will be prizes in five age categories: 7-10; 11-14; 15-18; 19+; TP Coaches. First, second, and third prizes will be awarded in each category, and the prizes will be based on the total points that a participant receives for their ten pitches. There will also be raffle prizes and food available from the BBQ…all in all it should be yet another fantastic day for our Toronto Playgrounds House League!
However, in order to pull it all together, we need your help! We are looking for volunteers to help staff the event, both on the field and off. If you are interested in helping at the BBQ, the scoring table, marshalling the batters, or shagging balls in the outfield, we have a position for you! There is a need for volunteers of all ages too. High school students can receive volunteer hours for helping out, and all volunteers will also receive a free hot-dog!
We hope to see you all there!
