THE SCHEDULE FOR OUR FIFTH SESSION OF SATURDAY INDOOR TRYOUTS TO FILL THE ROSTERS ON OUR RESPECTIVE 2014 TP ROOKIE BALL, MOSQUITO, MINOR & MAJOR PEEWEE SELECT TEAMS HAS BEEN FINALIZED
The TP Baseball Committee has finalized the schedule for its fifth session of Saturday indoor tryout sessions to fill the roster positions on its respective TP Rookie Ball (2005-2006), Mosquito (2003-2004), Minor Peewee (2002) and Major Peewee (2001) Select Teams for the upcoming 2014 season.
Our fifth series of indoor Select Team Tryouts will take place on Saturday February 8 at the Harbord Collegiate Institute gym located at 286 Harbord Street.
Players wishing to participate in the indoor Select Team sessions MUST be registered in our house league baseball program.
The Select Team tryouts are open to ALL registered house league players who are interested in playing a more “competitive” brand of baseball. If you’re only interested in playing House League baseball, there is no obligation to participate in the indoor Select tryout sessions. (Evaluations for our House League players will take place in late April.) However, if you’re interested in playing more competitive baseball, we encourage you to come out to the Select Team tryout sessions.
Players will ONLY be allowed to participate in the select tryouts after we have received a completed house league registration for the player, along with either having the full fee paid or having a payment arrangement in place. Registration forms with payment can be dropped off at the Monday sessions.
The Toronto Playgrounds Baseball Select program is an extension of the house league program. Playing Select gives players the opportunity to play more baseball at a higher skill level without having to make the larger time and financial commitment that is involved with “Rep” baseball. The select team is similar to a “house league all star team.”
Parents and Players are advised that there are tryouts involved for our Select teams, and players have to make the teams (not everyone trying out will necessarily be on the team). Each of our respective Select teams will play one game a week and have one practice in addition to their participation in our house league program. Players who make the Select teams, but who then do not take part in our house league games, will forfeit their spots.
There is a registration fee for the select teams which is in addition to the House League registration fee. The fee will depend upon the number of tournaments the team enters and the type of uniform they decide to use.
Additionally, Parents and Players are advised that any player who makes the Select Team MUST fully pay their Select registration fee (and respective House League registration fee) before the start of the Select regular season schedule in order to play for their team. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS.
Parents and Players are also advised that Select players must also participate regularly and appropriately in our house league program. When playing house league games, the players will be expected to wear their house league uniforms, just as they will be expected to wear their select uniforms when playing their select games.
At this point with our Saturday Select Team indoor tryout sessions, the focus will become more directed towards the coaches evaluating players in terms of who they will choose to play on the Select teams. The Committee is planning on giving our Select teams more time than last year to work together and practice as teams prior to the start of the Select schedule in early May….to that end, our plan is to have the teams chosen (with perhaps one or two spots still being decided upon) by the end of March. This will also give us time to get uniforms and equipment ordered and purchased in time for the first games.
Between now and Saturday March 8 (the last indoor session before the March Break), there will be five more indoor sessions left for each age group. If you’d like to be considered for one of our Select teams, we’ll need to see you out to at least two of those sessions, and one of those will need to be by Saturday, February 15.
We fully realize and understand that many families are busy with other commitments and activities on weekends during this time of year. However, we ask all of you to understand that in order to be fair and open in our selection process to our coaches and the other families involved, we require all of you to make the efforts required to attend at least two of the tryout sessions.
We will be using the large gym at Harbord Collegiate Institute (286 Harbord Street) this year for our Saturday indoor sessions. Beginning February 1 and going until late April, we’ll be using the gym from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m.
The following TP Select Team Tryout Schedule will be effect for Saturday, February 8, Saturday, February 15 and Saturday, February 22 at the Harbord Collegiate Institute Gym:
- 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. > Rookie Ball Select (2005-2006): This time will be for players interested in our Rookie Ball Select program.
- 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. > Minor Peewee Select (2002): This time will be for players interested in our Minor Peewee Select program.
- 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. > Major Peewee Select (2001): This time will be for players interested in our Major Peewee Select program.
- 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. > Mosquito Select (2003-2004): This time will be for players interested in our Mosquito Select program.
Harbord Collegiate Institute is located on the north side of Harbord Street between Euclid Avenue and Manning Avenue. To enter the school, people must use Door # 5, which is located at the northeast corner of the school off Euclid Ave. Once you go in that door follow the signs to the gym. Caretakers have told the Committee that there will be parking available in the underground school lot. The entrance to the lot is off Euclid Ave. just north of door # 5.
Toronto Playgrounds House League Baseball is looking at being involved in the West Toronto Select Loop for the 2014 season. This loop involves teams from Etobicoke, Weston, York, etc. We are planning to field teams in the Rookie Ball (players born in 2005 and 2006), Mosquito (players born in 2003 and 2004), Peewee (players born in 2001 and 2002), Bantam (players born in 1999 and 2000), and Midget (1996-1998) divisions. Teams will require at least 15 interested and committed players, two or three interested and committed coaches, and at least one parent willing to serve in a manager’s capacity.
There are set nights for select games in each division, and we will be informing you of those as soon as we have confirmed them with the loop organizers.
If you require more information or are interested in trying out for one of the select teams but are unable to make these tryout times, please contact us at tpbaseball@gmail.com.
