As baseball legend Bill Veeck once said, “There are only two seasons – winter and Baseball.”

And the quote rings true for the dedicated and passionate volunteers who are members of the Toronto Playgrounds Baseball Committee. The Committee works year round in its efforts to make the baseball experience at Christie Pits and Bickford Park a fun and rewarding experience for everyone involved.

For the past few weeks, the Committee has been busy organizing its baseball equipment for the upcoming 2014 season. That meant people taking the time and energy to stage our equipment in order to empty out our many equipment bags and organizing the gear that included an endless amount baseballs, bats, helmets, bases, catching gear, masks, gloves, uniforms, etc.

Committee members also performed an early spring cleaning of our equipment storage facilities with a fine tooth comb with broom, mop and Shop Vac in hand. In addition, we must also take inventory of all our gear so we can make astute assessments about what equipment must purchased for the season ahead so that we can maximize the return on our limited financial resources.

It’s a dirty and laborious job. But, as a Committee, we do it for the love of the game and the community that we serve.
