Lizzies starting pitcher Quinn (14) threw two scoreless innings while striking out four in leading his team to an 8-4 Mosquito Division victory over the Cubs at the Bickford Park South Diamond.

Beneath sunny skies on Opening Day of the 2014 Mosquito Division season, the Lizzies defeated the Cubs 8-4 in 3 ½ innings at the Bickford Park South Diamond.

With the Lizzies utilizing some strong pitching and defense to stymie the Cubs for most of the proceedings, the Lizzies offense were able to convert most of the opportunities presented to them and eventually prevail over their Mosquito Division rival.

Lizzies starter Quinn (14) pitched a scoreless first while striking out one to keep the Cubbies from dipping their paws in the honey jar.

In the bottom of the first, the Go Go Lizzies exploded for four runs to take an early 4-0 lead. After Quinn had stroked a double to lead off the inning, he would eventually utilize his speed to score the game’s first run after a pair of wild pitches by the Cubs.

After Jackson (7) had reached base on an error, Sam (8) and Lewis (10) drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Exercising great plate discipline, Coleman (2) drew a bases loaded RBI walk to score Jackson. After Manny (6) had put the ball in play, a Cubs fielding error would allow Sam and Lewis to come homeward bound.

With the bases loaded in the top of the second, Quinn pitched the Lizzies out of a mojo jojo jam by mowing down three Cubbies to keep them off the scoreboard.

The Lizzies added a pair in the bottom of the second to stretch their advantage to 6-0. After Louis (3) and Riley (11) had drew consecutive walks with one out, they both came home to roost on a series of Cubs miscues.

The pesky Cubs offense growled to life in the top of third as they scored four to trim the deficit to two. With the bases loaded, Julian B. (4) took advantage of a Lizzies wild pitch to score the Cubbies first run of the game.

After Julian M. (5) drew a walk to reload the bases, Javert (6) followed with a RBI single to bring Charlie (3) home. Subsequently, another wild pitch by the Lizzies would allow Han (12) to motor home with the Cubs third run. A pair of two out walks to Shamus (9) and Alexander (2) ensued to load the bases once more. Isaiah (10) followed with a RBI single to bring in Javert.

The Lizzies answered back in the bottom of the third with two insurance runs to widen their lead to 8-4. After Lewis had stroked a hit to lead off the inning, Coleman drew a walk to put two Lizzies on base. A subsequent Cubs wild pitch would allow Lewis to score from third and a RBI single from Louis would plate Coleman.

Refusing to surrender to their fate, the pesky Cubs loaded the bases in the top of the fourth in a tenacious comeback bid. However, Lizzies closer Louis (3) sealed the deal with some superb Gold Glove defensive plays to snuff out the Cubbies rally attempt.
