IN A RED LETTERED ROUND ROBIN SHOWDOWN, THE RED BIRDS THUMP THE BIG RED MACHINE TO EARN THE GOLDEN EGG OF SWEET VICTORY AT CHRISTIE PITS
Beneath a blanket of cloudy skies, the Cardinals defeated the Reds 7-1 in 3 ½ innings of Mosquito Division Round Robin Tournament play this evening at Christie Pits Diamond 2.
Firing on all cylinders, the Cards prevailed for the playoff victory in the Battle of the Reds by maximizing on the offensive opportunities presented to them and utilizing a solid bullpen to stymie the Reds. Cardinals pitchers combined to strike out ten Reds batters during the proceedings.
Here are the highlights:
- The Cardinals score three in the bottom of the first to take an early 3-0 lead. With base runners on second and first, the Cards called for a double steal. With the Reds catcher’s throw sailing high and down the third base line, Isaac (13) blazed home with the opening run of the game. With one out and the bases loaded, Rahim (1) came homeward on an error. Sara (3) follows with a bases loaded RBI walk to bring home Rio (11).
- In the top of the second, the Big Red Machine answer with a run to trim the deficit to two. After leading off the inning with a walk, Jashan (14) stole a pair of bases to reach third. Jashan followed with a brazen theft of home to score the Reds first run of the game.
- Feasting upon six walks, the Red Birds rely with three runs in the bottom of the second to extend their advantage to 6-1. Jacob (2), Joseph (5) and Owen (8) come homeward to the nest to roost.
- The Cards tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the third to widen their lead to 7-1. After a leadoff walk, Rahim steals a pair and comes blazing home on a Reds error.
The Cardinals (1-0) resume round robin playoff action on Thursday, September 4 when they host a 5:45 p.m. game against the Pirates (0-1) at Christie Pits Diamond 2.
