Beneath a ceiling of sunny and cloudy skies, the White Sox defeated the Mariners 9-4 in four innings of Mosquito Division action this evening at the Bickford Park South Diamond.

In an entertaining season opener for both squads, the White Sox ultimately prevailed over the Mariners by making the most of the opportunities presented to them during the hour and thirty-five minute affair.

Four White Sox pitchers combined to limit the potent Mariners batting lineup to four runs, five hits and six walks over the course of four frames while striking out nine batters. Meanwhile, the White Sox offense feasted upon a scrumptious helping of sixteen walks issued by the M’s bullpen to build a sizable lead that they would not surrender.

The White Sox jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first. After Jayden (8) and Eli R (7) led off the inning with a pair of walks to put two runners on base, Solly (14) followed with a one out walk that loaded the bases.

Eli D. (4) stepped up to the plate and stroked a RBI single to bring home Jayden with the first run of the game. Rafi (9) followed with a RBI walk that brought Eli R. homeward.

Mariners starter Max (14) extricated himself from a sticky wicket when he executed a 1-3 double play to get his team out of the inning. With a logjam on the basepaths, Max rushed forward off the mound to corral a chopper off the bat of Cooper (3) and calmly stepped on home plate to force out Solly for the second out. Making a quick turn, Max made a laser throw to first baseman Ben (10) to erase Cooper at first to record the third out.

After issuing two walks to lead off the bottom of the first, White Sox starter Cooper (3) found the groove and struck out the next three batters to quell the Mariners insurgency and keep them off the scoreboard.

In the top of the second, the White Sox added three more runs to widen their lead to 5-0. With two out and the bases loaded, Jayden drew a RBI walk that plated Kingley (1). Eli R. followed with a RBI single that allowed Elijah (5) to come home to roost. Next, Daniel (12) drew a RBI walk that brought Liam (13) homeward.

M’s reliever Coleman (13) mowed down a pair of White Sox in the second.

The Mariners answered back with a pair in the bottom of the second to trim the deficit to three. After a one out walk by Kai (8), Jude (3) and Cassius (4) stroked back to back singles to load the bases. Reed (1) followed with a clutch 2 RBI single that allowed Kai and Jude to come homeward bound.

Shaken, but not stirred, White Sox reliever Solly (14) struck out three in the second to extinguish the Mariners rebellion.

With authority, the White Sox responded to the M’s challenge by scoring four insurance runs in the top of the third to increase their lead to 9-2.

Taking advantage of a pair of walks and a hit batsman, the Sox loaded the bases to begin the frame. Kinsley followed with a RBI walk to score Eli D. With one out, Justin (11) and Elijah drew consecutive RBI walks that allowed Rafi and Cooper to sashay homeward. Later, Jayden delivered a RBI single to plate Kingsley.

Mariners reliever Eshetu (15) struck out two White Sox batters during the third.

In the bottom of the third, White Sox southpaw reliever Rafi (9) mowed down a pair of M’s with a John Deere X125 to keep the nautical Mariners off the scoresheet.

After walking three, Mariners relief pitcher Cassius (4) would strike out two in the top of the fourth to keep the White Sox off the scoring ledger.

The inning was highlighted by a sizzling 2-6 putout by the M’s defense. After Eli R. of the Sox drew a walk to start off the frame, he proceeded to attempt a steal of second. However, Mariners catcher Max gunned Eli R. down at second with a cannon throw to shortstop Ben (10), who deftly applied the tag on the wayfaring baserunner to record the first out of the inning.

Refusing to wave the white flag of surrender, the Mariners gamely mounted a rally attempt in the bottom of the fourth by scoring a pair to trail 9-4.

With two outs and two ducks on the pond, Coleman delivered a RBI single to bring home Cassius. Subsequently, Reed would pounce on a White Sox error to motor home from third.

Finding his rhythm, White Sox closer Daniel (12) would fan the final Mariners batter to seal the deal on a hard fought victory.
